Should I just buy new ones?

My daughter is a figure skater, and even very expensive skate blades will rust if not used for a few months. One thing that her friends use is a toothpaste with baking soda.
A finishing pad (brillo without the soap) will work. Get a very fine one and use it with some mineral oil.

Don't discard your skates because of a rusty blade. But do discard your skates if your boot is worn down and is not giving sufficient support.

The Blue Ribbon blades aren't high quality steel, so rusting is going to be an ongoing battle. It's great that you're taking such good care of them, though. Dry your skates after use and put the soakers on to 'soak up' any condensation. Don't zip your bag all the way and keep your skate rag in an outside pocket.

A good metal polish should take the rust stains off right away, but if it doesn't, try a little baking soda on a damp cloth or sponge. Don't rub the edges with anything - it'll make them dull.

Use a paste automobile wax on the blades. Rub it in, let it haze/dry, then buff it off. That will make then shiny and water-repelling. You have to repeat the treatment at least once a month.

Don't spray WD-40 on the skates themselves. It can soak in and loosen the blade screws/rivets and will stain the boot upper. Instead, look for the WD-40 STICK version. Rub it on the edges after you've dried your skates. It'll protect the edges from rusting.

Best of luck!

Ice Skate Blade

To help prevent your blades from further rusting, have them sharpened, that should take off the rust on the exterior of the blade, but in order to make sure you blades do not rust again here are a few tips: If you have a pair of blade guards, do not leave them on your skates when you are not wearing them, they hold water from the melted ice that comes off your blades. As soon as you take off your skates remove the blade guards, dry the blades carefully and the guards, then put your soakers on them. Keep the soakers on them at all times unless you are using your skates.

How much rust do they have on them? If they are super rusted out then you may have to buy new blades, but if it is only a small amount of rust then go ahead and use one of those green scrubby pads (that you typically use on dishes) with a small amount of veggie oil and see if you can scrub it off, and sharpening them will help get the rust off of the bottom, but if there is too much sometimes you end up buying new ones. Are you using skate soakers and leaving them on your skates after you skate, it should help reduce rusting.

Well likely you don't need to but new skates. Try getting them sharped and take care of them better,(i am sure that you take excellent care) when done skating you should not put on the hard blade covers. Try getting Soakers. they will stop rusting and they absorbe the wetness. if this does not help then ask your pro shop and see what they say. most likey just get them sharpen and get soaker,
i hope that i help. Good luck

Don not use steelwool on your blades. They won't do any good but they will damage the blades further. It depends how far the rust goes into the blade. Sometimes they grind them but if there really bad it pays to buy new.

Everyone has given great advice. Deffinitely do the WD40 and SOS pads. If that doesn't work just buy new ones. To prevent them from rusting again dry them off thoroughly after you use them...each time.

If the rust is really bad, then i suggest you get new ones, but if it is just a moderate rusting, take them to get sharpened and the rust will come off.
