it's a health term: 'distraction technique'
i'm not looking for the 'distraction of pain' through finger puppets here, it means something different i can't find

Medically speaking, I have only heard of the distraction technique in relationship to pain but it had nothing to do with "finger puppets". It involved:
relaxation techniques
challenging negative thoughts about pain and stress
activity pacing
attention focusing (guided imagery)

Over the years though, distraction technique, has come into use in other areas as well such as:
helping cope with fear of injections
helping cope with anxiety over a procedure
helping with dental appointment anxiety
behavior modification in disruptive children

If you are looking for other meanings for the term, I'm afraid you will need to be more specific since this is the only connotation I ever heard used.
