You're probably thinking of Italian "ciao", which is pronounced roughly like "chow". It's used informally by many people, including some Hungarians.

The other possibility is Hungarian "szia", pronounced something like "SEE ya", which is used as an informal greeting and/or farewell by most Hungarians. Note that this is the singular form: if you're greeting multiple people, the word is "sziasztok".

The word is Italian and spelled 'ciao'. However, the Spanish use is and spell it 'chau'. No idea how the Hungarians spell it.
