Simple toasters are set to a timer. More sophisticated toasters also have a thermometer, a moisture sensor and a electronic "eye" that checks the color change of the toast so when the slice of bread reaches a particular temperature, dryness level and degree of color the toast will pop up.

I think when you select how light or dark you want your toast it associates a time limit with that selection, which tells it to pop up at a certain time!

It has a set thermostat installed in the works, and whichever setting you put it to it sets it to that.
