Over the last year, my 1965 Mustang (automatic) has started fine, except about 4 times when it acts like it's not in park. I play with the gear shift, but I don't thing that does anything. After 6 or 7 tries, it suddenly starts. But it'll be fine for months, this happens once, and then it's fine for months before it happens again. Any idea what the problem is?
Thanks

It's probably the neutral safety switch, if nothing happens in park, try neutral. clean or replace

It could also be the ignition switch or starter solenoid, try shorting out the solenoid to start when this happens

one more would be a worn starter, with dirty brushes, tapping on it will sometimes help

My favorite car

It also could be a starter solenoid going bad. I had the same problem that drove me crazy. Replaced the starter solenoid and it was fine. If it does not start for you again, tap on the starter with a hammer, if it starts up, ya know what it is then.

before you do something exotic. check and make sure the battery cables are clean at the connection and tight.then check the connections at the starter. then the starter solenoid.
in that year it is repairable. if it happens again try starting it in neutral. if it starts then it is the neutral/park switch .

SVO man has excellent ideas, the only other thing I'd suggest is that it might be heat soak. If its happening after the car has been sitting idle than its not heat soak.

Have a new NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH put in--it is starting to go and will someday never start again--do it NOW

Yeah, what SVOMAN said. I agree. The only possible fix is to sell it to one of us. LOL.
