Yes, I think that is one of many factors. Electronics are mind-numbing (I say this while sitting in front of my computer) and take time away from things like climbing in trees. I can't remember the last time I saw a kid climbing a tree.

People also eat much more when sitting in front of the TV and we also eat too much junk when we go to movie theaters.

I think the major culprits though are:

- cheap calories in the form of simple carbohydrates
- convenience foods which provide cheap calories easily
- high fructose corn syrup in everything
- industrial production of everything from bagged veggies to industrialized meat
- lack of local, seasonal production because of industrialization
- large plates, oversized portions (super size me!), 24/7 eating (some fast food place is advertising a fourth meal!)
- cars instead of walking to school, lack of PE
- stress
- lack of sitting down to family dinners in favor of eating on the run

This is a fun and eye opening read:

It's also about the media instilled terror that if you let your child go outside for an instant, he or she will be immediately snatched by a rapist or child-molestor. Yes, this can and does happen, but the incidence of this is so statistically rare as to be almost insignificant. One has a higher chance of being hit by lightning. It's the same way with the weather. What was once just a rainstorm has become a media event, an "EMERGENCY", if you will, to the point where I don't even watch the news anymore. It's like being attacked. I have to say it: The world was a wonderful place when I was growing up. How is it that we've managed to completely ruin it in just one or two generations? Football used to be free. Now it would have cost $1500+ for my son to play. He didn't b/c we couldn't afford it. Busing used to be free. Now they want to charge us almost $400 in Placer Co., CA to ride the school bus? Folks, let's face it: It's all about greed here in the world now. And the world and all its people have gone to hell b/c of the greed of just a very few people, who have no love, no intelligence, and no common sense or decency. We live in a world controlled by corporations and marketing departments, where obsolescence is built in and people define their "worth" by the things they own. Meanwhile, I have never seen a more corrupt, lying, murderous, amoral, laughable, stupid administration ("Thievery Corporation") than the one that's in office right this minute. There isn't a single "leader" or "hero" among them. No wonder our kids are cowering inside, pushing their little buttons on their little machines and eating crap.

No, I don't think that's the case per se. I think kids are getting fatter b/c their parents are allowing them to be like that. I know of plenty young folks who have an XBox or Wii who are fit and healthy. The video games do not consume all of their time as they have other activities going on such as sports or music.
Ultimately, it's the responsibility of the parents or guardians to make sure that their children are heavy. It's easy to blame an inanimate object, but if the problem is going to be properly addressed and reversed, a human being needs to be held accountable.

Electronics don't make anyone fat. As the matter of fact they are not edible. Years ago kids went outside to play and received plenty of exercise due to this. In this day and age adults and kids stay home more due to the entertainment that is provided at home, with very little exercise involved. Back in 1970, which is only 37 years ago, you had 3 T.V. stations to watch, C.B.S., N.B.C., & A.B.C. What 8 year old kid wanted to watch " Days of our lives", looks like we need a good game of Baseball, round up the neigborhood.

Electronics don't make people fat. Too many calories and not enough exercise is what makes people fat. Parents who allow children to sit on computers and video game consoles all day long without getting any exercise are to blame. These also seem to be the same parents who feed their kids fast and junk food. Parents need to set examples for healthy living or their children won't learn it.

don't place blame away from the source... bad habits picked up by their surroundings such as a poor balanced diet.

seems vegetables, fruits and moderating caloric intake.. is one of the major foundations to the ever so resonating issue..

eat more a well balanced diet and even with out regular activity one's weight and health should improve.

you got to have minerals, vitamins and fresh product... all those chemicals in processed foods and not drinking enough water and fresh juices will take the impact and make it harder for one to burn calories and lose weight when one does change their habits...

our bodies can't process all that inert material and chemistry.

eat good and the body will do good also.

and activity at least 3 times a week for more than 30 minutes is also a good start.

the primary goal is.. keep the kids from picking up mc donalds.. oreos.. potato chips.. doritos... keep them from eating t.v. dinners...

make them eat an apple.. drink a glass of water... eat a salad without much condiments... eat spinach... eat fresh corn on the cob.. eat avocados instead of mayo with their sandwhiches... so on.

a bag of doritos will impact the body much longer and harder than a bag of beans. :D

also canned foods.. boxed, bagged, frozen.. don't have the minerals and vitamins! go to the fresh produce and bribe the child until it becomes a habit... and they'll feel better.. not be so tired.. hypertension will not overcome them in their teen years... so on.

obesity will be harder to accomplish.

fresh is best.. they want meat... keep the portions low and go to the BUTCHER! (the meat is fresher and way less chemicals)

and give them a regiment.. chores.. it's not the kids fault or the games fault.. t.v. internet... don't blame those things.. blame those who are involved with the child's upbringing...

control that diet.. give them good habits early.. it will work for them not against them.

No. I think it is the lazy parents who push McDonalds in front of thier faces and prop them up in front of the tv. Parenting skills have gone down the drain and I'm so sick of it! Out of control children with no respect who eat nothing but junk food. It sounds extreme but look around you. When I was a kid, which wasn't too long ago, we played outside and ate fast food maybe 1-2 times a month. I feel so bad for these children.

I don't think electronics are to blame, but the lack of time limits set by parents on the electronics. Children should be running around and playing, not sitting in front of a screen all day.

I think that it is a contributing factor, but not the only one. We have had electronic media for some time. We have much more and at it is much more ubiquitous, but the fact is that fewer parents have adequate time to spend with their children and allow the media to raise and babysit them. We are to busy and our kids aren't busy enough in a constructive manner. It not only has impact on their physical health but also their mental development. It had been theorized that children who watch too much TV before 2 years of age have less ability to interact normally in society. Their is also the issue of kids can't play outside because it isn't as safe as it when our nation was more innocent. Even when I was little I was allowed to play outside all day largely unsupervised but that just isn't safe anymore. So instead of letting our kids play and use their natural energies we drug them into submission with Ritalin and brainwash them with the same media that has a hold on our adult population.

to an extent yes. Several kids would rather play video games or be on the computer, than exercising or doing something useful, or even just playing outside or going for walks, bike riding or anything. They want the electronics, because it is more entertaining to them. Children don't use their imagination as much now, compared to what they used to.
