The government guarantees you nothing. They may promise you anything to get your name on the dotted line, but in reality it depends on your apttitude test and what MOS you are best suited for. I signed a four year contract and seperated from active duty after my four year tour, but did two years in the in-active reserve. Today though, with the conflict in Iraq, you can't be sure about being released. Many that are up for retirement are being extended. If you are giving thought to enlisting, consider it very carefully and hopefully make a wise choice. I loved my tour, especially being able to travel to places I otherwise would not have ever been able to visit. It was truly an adventure. Best wishes to you and good luck. Semper Fi If by chance you serve in a war zone, upon your return you'll be given more respect and shown more appreciation than we got upon returning from Viet Nam. Good luck buddy.

Eagle Scout will get you advanced one or two paygrades., I forget which.
your contract will spell out exactly what they are offering you. If your contract does not list a specific school in it, then you will be at the mercy of the marines and they will send you where they want to send you. NOW, this doesn't mean that once they have trained you, they can't decide that they need you someplace els.. cuz they can and will do that. All they guarantee is a slot in a particular school. It is up to you to pass said school, . They do NOT promise that you will be working in that field exclusively from then on. Also, if you are unable to get qualified for that job.. either by failing the tests, or being color blind or being unable to get a security clearance, or the job just plain goes away, you may or may not be allowed to choose where you go next.. although it will probably be limited to choices they need filling.
As for Leave, once schools are done, you may take leave as long as your Command signs off on it. You earn 30 days per year at a rate of 2.5 days/month. At the end of the your Active Duty commitment, they can a Stop Loss you and keep you longer, for a total of eight years, which is what ALL contracts are for.

There is no guarantee that you will get the MOS of choice. You can get the basic MOS like infantry for example, but the specific job may not be available. It is your choice if you want to extend your contract over your enlistment so you can go on another tour. If your unit is scheduled to be deployed and this tour would go over your four years though, you will be moved to a different company. Spending time in eagle scouts will be recognized when it comes to military service.

Sign the contract and make sure your job is guranteed. A four year contract move to a reserve after 4 years. Eagle Scout might help. It will defiantely help with the Naval Academy if you want to be an officer.

If it's anything like the UK. you can basically be put in any branch of a unit (although relevant qualifications & aptitude help). As for your contract, again if it's like the UK, it may be a case of "you work for us, not us for you"- if you're abroad and needed, tough, you stay. You also have 10yrs on the "reserves list", so at any period in that 10yrs, you can be re-activated.
They'll try and get you into unpopular trades, clerks, medics etc. If they try and railroad you, threaten to resign, if they still try, quit- otherwise you'll find yourself being pushed around from one shitty job to another.

Maybe sure you have guaranteed placement. Those recruiters try to get you in so they can make a quota!! Dont listen to their garbage. Be blunt and say you wont sign until they guarantee you a slot in your chosen field.. I made the mistake of going in open general and i was serving food at a dining facility.

I would talk to your Recruiter prior to signing anything. Chances are, if you join the Marines, you will either be in Iraq or Afghanistan, or maybe even Iran, if the President chooses to invade Iran.
