I am recently unemployed with 25 years of administrative, marketing and sales experience. A little over a year ago, I recently earned my real estate license. I attempted to sell real estate while holding down my full time job. (I had to pay the bills!) But, I went into the red almost immediately with desk fees, etc. I need more training in order to sell real estate. I don't want to throw any more money away, if there is no future for me in selling real estate. I need to work for 20 more years. I'm wondering if we are in a time when real estate agents are going to be phased out? I have changed companies and put my license in referral. I believe it will cost me another $250.00 to take a two week course to get going again. I need some advice.

Realtors aren't likely to be phased out, but their jobs are changing somewhat as many prospective clients do the initial "sifting" online. Realtors still show the homes and guide clients through the purchase process from the offer to closing.

Agents will not become obsolete, the market always cycles and will bounce back. Right now just isn't the best time to start in the business when seasoned professionals are struggling. A large part of this is that the mortgage industry is in a lot of trouble and without mortgages, you can't sell many houses.

Also, you should have a strong marketing budget, because you will have to weed through lots more prospects now since far fewer people can qualify than a year or so ago.

Best of luck.
