You count the cylinders from the passenger side frnt to drivers side; so the cylinder closest to the right frnt fender is cylinder #1, then the next is #2 etc.

After removing the glow plug, look at to see if the tip or wire is eaten away, if it is, you might have an injector that is dripping and not spraying correctly at start up. If it is eaten away, then the same thing is likely to happen again. Add some injector cleaner to the fuel; there are some brands designed to work with diesel motors, be sure and replace the diesel fuel filter every 20,000 miles as called for the owner's manual. Also drain the filter every 10,000 miles, to remove water and other garbage is also called for by the manual.

Water is the #1 enemy of injectors and can cause them to rust or restrict flow and make the injector drip instead of the proper spray pattern. If the injector is dirty, sometimes with a diesel pop tool and the correct solvent they can be cleaned; that is a job for a shop.

Hope this helps, a car nut.

Most cars, cylinder 1 is the cylinder at the front of the engine. Since your engine is transverse mounted, the front would be the the side further's from the transmission
