Hello! I am looking for suggestions for a good SUV to get around in. So far, half the people I have talked to said go with an import then the other half say stay with North American made! LOL

Looking for some suggestions from SUV owners :)

I like the Nissan Xterra as well as the Jeep Cherokee.

Considerations:

Highway driving in snow
Need med. cargo space (min 4 seats as well)
4x4, 4wd are a must
SAFETY rating is very important to me

I am looking at both new and used SUV's

Thanks- your suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The Xterra and the Jeep are both great options. It is going to come down to personal preference for you.

Personally, I would pick the Xterra unless you live somewhere where you are going to be offroading every day.
The Xterra is very capable for offroading, but Jeep is still superior in these capabilities.

Advantages on the Xterra include:
- Interior is a little more comfortable and roomy. The Jeep's interior is a lot of plastic and gives me a 'cheap' impression.
- Xterra will hold its value a little better.
Jeeps (and most domestic vehicles) depreciate very quickly, so sometimes it is better to get a 1 or 2 year old Jeep with 15K-20K miles on it. That way, someone else pays for the depreciation and you still get a vehicle that will last you many years.

Good luck.

For all of your needs, try the Standard 4 wheel drive Subaru Tribeca.

Tribeca in the Market
As the saying goes, you only have one chance to make a first impression. That applies in the car world, and Subaru now has an uphill battle to get consumers who may have been turned off by the B9 Tribeca's looks to reconsider the updated Tribeca. With the range of choices consumers have in its class, you might even say it's an impossible battle.

Safety
Standard safety features include side-impact airbags for the front seats, an electronic stability system and active head restraints for the front seats. Side curtain airbags are also standard, but they only deploy over the first and second rows even though the Tribeca can have an optional third-row seat.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the Tribeca five stars for its frontal crash-test performance. That's the highest rating possible and indicates a 10 percent or less chance of serious injury.

The updates make the Tribeca a better SUV than it was before. However, significant ergonomic and visibility problems and an only-adequate new engine mean that even though the styling blunder has been corrected, the Tribeca still has some catching up to do in the midsize-crossover segment. Oh and it also comes with an optional 3rd row seat.

May your choice be the best

The Nissan Xterra looks awesome and has cool features, but I took one for a test drive and I felt like I was driving a tank. Poor handling and just TOO BIG.
The Jeep Cherokee was nice a few years ago when they were smaller, but now you can only buy the Jeep Grand Cherokee. And with the increase in size comes the increase in cost.
I almost bought a Jeep Liberty, but their not as good on gas as similar sized vehicles.
I finally decided to buy a Hyundai Tucson. Great look, good on gas, roomy and comfortable seats, ample backseat room, plenty of storage in the trunk, extremely fun to drive, great safety rating, EXCELLENT in the snow when in 4 wheel drive (I live in northeast PA where we typically get at least 2 or 3 major snow storms per winter), nicely priced at $24,000.

Whether an SUV or car, you can't make a lot of mistakes with cars from Toyota, Honda, or Nissan these days. They make cars with reliable power plants that will go forever with good care. That being said, there are those who will buy nothing other than an American truck. And there is something to be said for a homegrown behemoth. But for me, I'd look at the imports. I like my cars to last.

I truthfully have a relatives of seven so i know your quandary. the final element that I truthfully have discovered (by using gasoline costs going up and not finding as they are going to flow down every time quickly) is the acquisition of a city and united states or Honda van. they have the entertainment constructive aspects for the relatives and additionally get 2 to three times the gasoline mileage that an SUV with that form of seating could get. they look advantageous on the interior and out and are great for short travels or long journeys.

I'd say to go with a Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 Litre engine. It's a tried and true engine, and a nice ride.
And the new lifetime warranty on the drivetrain helps too.
