Jesus, the I AM

Perhaps the boldest claim Jesus made about His identity was the statement, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58). Translated into English, His statement may appear or sound confusing. But in the Aramaic or Hebrew language in which He spoke, He was making a claim that immediately led the people to try to stone Him for blasphemy.

What was going on here? Jesus was revealing His identity as the actual One whom the Jews knew as God in the Old Testament. He was saying in one breath that He existed before Abraham and that He was the same Being as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Anciently when the great God first revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus 3:13-14, Moses asked Him what His name was. "I AM WHO I AM," was the awesome reply. "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

Jesus clearly claimed to be this same Being—the "I AM" of Exodus 3:14, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (verse 15).

"I AM" is related to the personal name for God in the Old Testament, the Hebrew name YHWH. When this name appears in our English Bibles, it is commonly rendered using small capital letters as LORD. It is transliterated as "Jehovah" in some Bible versions.

When Jesus made this startling statement, the Jews knew exactly what He meant. They picked up stones to kill Him because they thought He was guilty of blasphemy.

"I AM" and the related YHWH are the names of God that infer absolute timeless self-existence. Although impossible to translate accurately and directly into English, YHWH conveys meanings of "The Eternal One," "The One Who Always Exists" or "The One Who Was, Is and Always Will Be." These distinctions can apply only to God, whose existence is eternal and everlasting.

In Isaiah 42:8 this same Being says, "I am the LORD [YHWH], that is My name; and My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to carved images." A few chapters later He says: "Thus says the LORD [YHWH], the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: 'I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God" (Isaiah 44:6).

To the Jews, there was no mistaking who Jesus claimed to be. He said He was the One the nation of Israel understood to be the one true God. By Jesus making claim to the name "I AM," He was saying that He was the God whom the Hebrews knew as YHWH. This name was considered so holy that a devout Jew would not pronounce it. This was a special name for God that can only refer to the one true God.

Dr. Norman Geisler, in his book Christian Apologetics, concludes: "In view of the fact that the Jehovah of the Jewish Old Testament would not give his name, honor, or glory to another, it is little wonder that the words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth drew stones and cries of 'blasphemy' from first-century Jews. The very things that the Jehovah of the Old Testament claimed for himself Jesus of Nazareth also claimed ..." (2002, p. 331).

There are many verses which many already posted-- Revelation 1:8 also says that Jesus is the Alpha and Omega- the beginning and the end. God is the beginning and the end. They are one in the same- just as John 10 says.
And John 1:1 -- very important verse.
Also here is one:
1 John 5:20
We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

- Yes God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all 3 in one.

Have you ever read a Holy Bible? Jesus is The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. God became man as Jesus trying to get what HE created to follow HIS ways and not Lucifer's (the Devil) ways. Read a Holy Bibile with an open mind and you'll discover a lot of things; but always ask for help understanding things. Humans wrote the Bible making it difficult to understand sometimes. That's where education comes into life; priests and ministers don't just take on that job; they are well educated. Asking questions is a great way to learn!

Decide for yourself.

BTW, what did Jesus mean when he said, that "'They will all be taught by God"? (obviously referring to himself here) If simply following the other prophets were NOT the same as being "taught by God", then what else could Jesus be saying ? Was God teaching in person?:
-----------------------------------------------

John 5:18
For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

John 6:39-48
"And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."

"Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.
"No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. I am the bread of life."

John 14:6-11
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."

Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves."

Jesus claimed to be God many times. This is why the Jews wanted Him crucified. Jesus stated "before Abraham there was I Am." When Ciaphas, the leader of the Pharisees, asked Jesus are you the Son of God? Jesus replied " I AM." The Jews knew that to say that you were the Son of God would be the same as saying that you are God because they both are One.

Jesus never did say that he is GOD. But the reason why the Jews wanted to crucify him is because he equated himself as GOD when he said The Father and I are one.. In John 1:1 it reads the in the begining was the word. The word was GOD and the word is GOD. Further in the chapter it states that Jesus is the Word. In Revalation it reads that Jesus is the Alpha and Omaga. Only GOD has those names. Thus Jesus is GOD. No, on no account. He studied scripture his complete lifestyles & even again whilst he used to be 12 he understood his mandate. Jesus went by way of hell proclaiming for the period of his ministry considering the fact that he knew what he used to be speaking approximately & he used to be up in opposition to a monolith of satanic conspirators who had been hellbent on discrediting him I'm essentially the most ridiculously misleading methods. He knew precisely what he used to be considering the fact that he stored prophesying the whole thing prematurely. If he had the medical abilities to do miracles simply along with his brain, you would consider he could deviate from his mandate, abandon theology & emerge as a few style of glorified witch, like most of the fake Messiahs did. But he suffered extreme persecution & loss of life considering the fact that he used to be not anything not up to most likely positive in his position.

Yes. In Exodus (is what I am presently think of). P.S. The Lord (not lord) from Genesis-Malachi was the Lord Jesus Christ; despite an addition to God's word about 100 years ago.

I've seen a lot of defenders quote John 10:30- 'I and the Father are one'.
How can you say that it's not metaphorical? Especially since he says somewhere else that 'No one is good but God' and he prays to God on the cross?

THere is a trune God of three. the word trinity does not appear, as they had another word . But it describes this triune God, of three operating as one. Bible says Jesus Christ is God, the Word made flesh. THe word is Jesus.

God says the HOly Spirit is God and says when we lie to the HOly Spirit, we lie to God. There is Father God, Jesus the son, and the Holy Spirit, that are all God three operating as one with the GODHEAD title. each has a specific purpose. get a bible look in the back for scirputres like this and look them up and the Bible says that God always just was. Its not up to us to question it, we either believe it or not.
Sure easier to believe than believing we all came from the big bang explosion. Where did all of that stuff come from that exploded????? HUH?????
If pppl will only get a Bible and study for themselves, they will see what GOd says. Doesnt matter what a church says or anyone else. doesnt even matter what I say ITs only what Gods says and its all there for each to see, if they dont, they cant blame God for it. HE tells us and warns us about hell. Not His fault if few will read and know.
