Out of my three dogs, the female Dobie hates thunder, as much as firecrackers. Why she is like that is beyond me. Always have been an inside dog so it isn't like she has been stuck out in the midst of a storm. Her mother was the same way so maybe she inherited it. LOL

yes, we had a dog that was afraid of storms, and i think a lot of dogs are. the best i can suggest is do what you can to make your dog feel safe and secure, act very calm around him, tell him everything is ok, pet him, etc. the dog we have now was afraid of thunder and rain when we first got her, but now, since i always act like its no big deal and always try to comfort her, she doesn't care about it anymore. no that won't work for every dog, but give it a try. also if scratching is going to continue, consider restraining your dog someplace he can't do that until the storm goes away. put him in another room or in a dog crate.

this is a difficulty now. the hurricane scares here by way of thunder. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that she has linked the rain and the lights to the thunder or maybe if if there is not any thunder, seeing the rain and lights will positioned her into her state of marvel. it extremely is something she will/can't exchange. I even have discovered that putting my canine in my bathing room with the door closed for the duration of storms and 4th of july, facilitates quite. the clarification is by way of fact my bathing room has a ceiling fan. The sound of the fan and the actuality he's closed in and can't see or hear the hurricane is an extremely massive help. optimistically you have got a room including this. perhaps a basement (in the event that they have basements in FL) besides, in case you do away with the sound and sight you do away with the terror. Please try all avenues earlier you think of of doing away alongside with your woman. it is so not straight forward for them to readjust each and every so often.

Poor thing. Can you bring him inside?
I have a 4 year old Pug that barks and hides under the bed every time it storms, he's terrified of thunder and lightening. It doesn't bother my Lab a bit.

Totally chicken! We have 3 dogs, and the 2 big ones are terrified of thunder and fireworks. The only thing we can do is to bring them inside during a storm or July 4 fireworks, or kennel them. you cannot train this out of them, it is instinct to hide from thunder. If you bring them in, be prepared to have them try to climb inside your shirt. If you kennel them, make sure they have something to chew on to relieve stress.

Yeah, my mini dachshund barks and whines alot when there's heavy rain and thunder. He doesn't scratch at the door, though. Putting him in the crate before/during bad weather should do the trick.

I have a 95lb lab mix who is almost 7 years old. She is such a baby when it storms. It's almost to the point where I am going to have to give her a sedative. Some dogs are just big babies. I have 2 other dogs and it doesn't bother them at all.

It's pretty common. Dogs hearing is much more sensitive than a humans, loud thunder claps might be hurting his ears. Consult a vet and see about getting some sedatives for the next time.

I personally don't...but a couple of my co-worker's dogs are TERRIFIED of storms. So much so that they pant, whine, cry, hide in the bathtub, etc while it is storming. My boss's dog is prone to seizures and gets very upset when it storms so she is prescribed "doggy Valium" to give to him when he is upset. It helps him out a lot, he becomes mellow and is less likely to work himself up so much that he has a seizure. If your dog persists to have problems during storms, call your vet and see if they would recommend getting medication for him to take.
