I thinmk it was Lincoln that said there never was a just war or a bad peace. People don't start wars for no reason, and there is usually an agressor.
The only exception to this is scare-scenarios where two countries spontaneously decide to hold their war games exercises along their mutual border and when each sees the other massing troops and both sides believing themselves about to be attacked, mutually attack one another by acccident. But this is what the media is for to make sure eveybody knows it is just an exercise. And you don't hold them right on the border, either. That's why this scenario is so unrealiztic.
So, in any case, you are going to have an attacker and a defender. In many cases, the attacker may try to justify things saying they took our land long ago, etc, but the attacker is certainly sacrificing innocent people (especially if it was so long ago.)
Now, if you are the one attacked, what are you going to do, just sit there and let it happen? No, it's a kill or be killed situation.
Sadly, there is probably no way to avoid sacrificing innocents., Even if the attacking forces are totally evil, and you are innocent, if you kill them, you vicitmize their innocent children. Yet if you let them kill you, your own innocent children will suffer. So it comes down to a choice of WHOSE cjhildren do you want to suffer, theirs or yours?
You might wonder, which is worse, to kill them right away and thus limit their suffering or allow them to live and prolong their suffering.

in war there are always going to be casualties... and yes sometimes the lives of the innocent are lost... that's why it's called "war". that's just the way it works. it's been that way forever, and it will continue to be that way.
as for "winning"... there is no real winner even after wars are ended. there is usually just a small group of people who got what they wanted, and the rest of the people just have to deal with it.

gosh almighty ... if and when your opponents choose to stand up like men, wear uniforms, and cease hiding behind the veils and skirts of civilians, yes --- we could do a lot better job.
On the other hand, when Hezbollah builds ammo bunkers under homes and schools it isn't going to happen. Another wonderful program brought to you courtesy of funding from Iran.

Not as long as there are liberals to complain about how the war is fought and the media to tell us how wrong we are for being there.

'Win' is undefined in war.
Some people get what they want, most people do not.
