Why all the cover up: I have friends who say the two are not the same but that's simply not true:

"Joseph Smith, Jr. (December 23, 1805 – June 27, 1844) was an American religious leader who founded the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism"

I thought their full handle was 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints'? And I've known that for decades! 'Mormons', however, slips off the tongue a wee bit more easily! (And as they use 'The Book of Mormon' such a lot, they are asking to be called Mormons, aren't they?)

As an aside, the JWs also feel it's important to get Jesus' name into their own name. They would prefer to be called 'The Congregation of Jehovah's Christian Witnesses', despite the fact they think the name 'Jehovah' is more important than Jesus' name. And the Mormons think Joseph Smith's name is more important than Jesus' name. Humm.... do I detect a couple of after-thoughts here....?

Actually, the official name is The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints. This is really no secret. The only ones who don't know are the ones who have never heard of the church in the first place.

And, we believe that the name of JESUS CHRIST is more important than any other name. Otherwise, we would be the Church of Joseph Smith.

Let's put it this way; All Latter-Day Saints are Mormon, but not all Mormon's are Latter-Day Saints. Since Joseph Smith founded "Mormonism" there have been many break-offs and splinter groups. There are LDS, Community of Christ (formerly RLDS), FLDS, Temple Lot Church of Christ, Strangites, and others.

Everyone knows. Just like Scope no longer want to be called The Spastic Society, The Church of Latter Day Saints no longer what to be associated with a name that sounds remarkably like 'Morons' ;)

LDS, were called mormons, based on their acceptance of the book of mormon. -

In recent years, because of the confusion associated with some of the other groups (also sometimes called mormons) like the RLDS church, the TLC, Warren Jeffs group, Rulon Allred's group, etc. who's beliefs differ from the LDS church (including polygamy), some LDS members emphasize the LDS rather than mormon. It's not to cover-up anything - it's to try and avoid confusion with other groups also called mormon.

A lot of people are just strange that way. They think Mormons and Latter-day Saints are different... odd...

I used to be a Mormon and I will continue to call them Mormons. They only began using "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" when they were accused of not being Christian. In the five years that I went to their church, we never opened a Bible. It was all about the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price.

They openly admit they are Mormons, it is not a conspiracy and almost everyone knows LDS = Mormons. They do separate themselves from other branches of Mormons, but so do Christians and even Muslims.
