The catch is that radar detectors are illegal to have in your car while driving. They do NOT alert you to when a polic car is nearby. They alert when a certain frequency of radar is around and on. Funny thing is many officers never use radar...my last squad didn't even have it. Still gave out plenty of speeding tickets. Its called "pacing".
They sell 'em because they know fools will still buy them! Drive with one and get caught and its a misdemeanor, which is up to 90 days in jail and/or up to a $1000 fine. Never would be that much, but thats the max.

I think that it's a state by state thing. I know that, in some states, cops can break into your car to get it out if they see it from the outside.
Reason for this being that the radar detector is being used deliberately in conjunction with an illegal activity. In this case the activity would be speeding.
Also, the radar detector does not just warn about cops. Any type of radar activates it. This includes sensors for doors that automatically open (Grocery store, etc.) Friend of mine always had his go off when he was parked at work.

Ok, first off, it depends on the State in which you live in or where you're travelling. For example, in NY it's illegal for a truck over 18,000 lbs. to have a radar detector but it's not illegal for a car. However in Virginia, it's illegal for any vehicle to have a radar detector.
Also, radar detectors, will not help you against a "laser" device (which is target specific - not zone generic) & can be used at longer distances to "lock" in a vehicle's speed or if you're "clocked" or "paced" (this is where the police officer uses his/her speedometer to match your speed for a period of distance).

The catch is that while speeding on the highway, by the time you radar detector alerts you and you slow down accordingly, the cop has already clocked your high speed and will be waiting for you as you cruise by doing the speed limit.

Depends on the jurisdiction. A radar detector won't alert you to the presence of equipment that uses a laser.

You wasted your money sorry to say. It won't detect laser, and most cops turn on the radar detector in time to get the car they are trying to see that is speeding, by that time it's too late.

IN most but not all 50 states. IN think they are banned in VA, DC, and a few other states. Also your Radar detector will not detect Laser speed traps.

Depends on your State laws. Most police departments are using laser units that cannot be detected. They only transmit a signal when the trigger is squeezed. That means.....too late for a detector.
