They will be on your licence and 'active' for 3 years.
'Active' means they count towards the totting-up procedure. Get 12 points and you will lose your licence.
They will remain on your licence, but 'inactive' for a further 12 months. They do not count towards the totting-up procedure during this time.
At the end of the 4 year period, you can pay to have the points removed. This currently costs around £20.
You will be required to declare these points to your insurance company for 5 years after the date of conviction.

Their on your licence for 4 years in total but they only count for 3.

For three years after which time you can send it back to be removed. Most insurers seem to ask for convictions over a longer period.
