It is a rather interesting question, and the answers are even more interesting. Check out the links below for a little about the history and inconsistencies in Joseph Smith's accounts of how he received the Book of Mormon, according to eyewitnesses, and other doctrinal inconsistencies in Mormonism.

I had this very same question as a child growing up in the Mormon church. I was told it was because of the latter days - god waited until the end was near to reveal the truth so it wouldn't have as long as christianity to become corrupted.
"Well," I asked, "what about all those unlucky souls born before Joseph Smith's time?"
"Oh, well, that's why we do baptisms for the dead."
Ohhhhhhhhh. It all makes sense now.
Oh, yeah, and the USA is a chosen land. God had to wait until this great country was well established to reveal the truth.

Well as you know God didn't wait for anyone especially a bunch of deceivers like the Mormons.
I watched an interview where these women deplored all the infighting and murders committed amongst rival Mormon Heads and she said "these guys are giving polygamy a bad name"

God was waiting for someone "worthy" enough. In this case worthy was defined as, con-man, practicer of the occult and womanizer.

The whole fabrication came out of the mind of Joesph Smith...
could it be that he made some camp stew from what ever local game he shot, threw some local (unknown) vegetation into the stew pot....magic mushrooms or something.....washed it all down with a bottle of rot gut....
Yes , he would be seeing all kinds of things.... and that stew tasted pretty good so he remembered them funny vegetables he found in the woods for his stew...and made it very often...
The rot gut back then was not the purest..had strange things in it...would also cause you to be seeing strange things.....
This was a perfect set up for Satan to manipulate ....appearance as a false angel "maroni" the gold plates, unknown language, translation, a "New bible" to give credibility, a new name and new exclusivity, etc....
Perhaps we should be grateful it wasn't pink elephants and flying saucers??
none of it is from God....

Well from what i know the idiot who heard God "talking" to him was unable to read or write so how could he have written the book of mormon or whatever. so i believe that christianity is true but the mormonism isn't true.
