Because this Earth and all in it did not come about by Chance. For instance this Planet we live on is the Only one we know of that can sustain life. Not Mars, in fact No Planet in our Solar System. This Earth is Just the right Distance from the Sun, a Few Hundred Miles forward,we would be burnt to a crisp, a few Hundred Miles back and we would Freeze to Death.. No Sir, We are Unique. Therefore a Unique God Must have made it so. Nothing so well balanced could have come about By chance. Consider the Tilt of this Planet.. it allows us all to share the Seasons. Chance? How about the air we breathe which is the mixture of invisible odorless tasteless gases (as nitrogen and oxygen) that surrounds the earth .. why is it not found on any of the planets in our Solar system?
Even IF we did not have a Bible to Read of the Creator.. anyone with half a Brain would have to come to the conclusion that there is " Something going on here" that cannot be explain.

What else are you going to do?
Society evolved (and is still evolving) to promote the greatest good for the greatest number. We are the dominant life form because we have figured out an effective way to work together.

Murder has been taboo in just about every society with any duration.
Abortion? That's your personal worldview of right and wrong, probably heavily influenced by your spiritual upbringing.

Hypothetical: You're in a small boat. There's room for one more person. Your child and your mother are in the water with sharks closing in. Who do you save?

Your definition of value and someone else's could vary. Your definition of right and wrong is not universal. The ritual sacrifice to Sun gods was believed to strengthen the society as a whole.

Bottom line: Right and wrong is all in the eye of the beholder.

There are things that are considered "moral" in the christian bible, such as slavery, that no thinking person would condone. Morality is a consequence of evolution. Humans are not the only animals who have morals. All social animals have them.

Why Christians Must Steal From Secular Morality:
http://www.caseagainstfaith.com/submissions/steal_morality.htm
Christians must steal their moral rules from secular morality. They have no choice, as the Bible does not offer a moral system, it only offers a series of contradictory commands and a supposed threat of punishment in the "afterlife" for not following them - a punishment that is given equally to all violators - whatever the sin.

The Bible does nothing and can do nothing towards inculcating moral behavior on its own. Christians must steal from secular moral systems, and then merely graft their 'God threats' on top of this moral system. This is necessary. And the reason for this is simple: there is no morality in the Bible and there can be no morality in the Bible, because the Bible holds that 1) ALL 'sins' are equivalent (destroying any moral sense) AND 2) all moral behavior is immaterial, because works cannot save a person, AND finally all people are damned from birth.

In reality, Christians realize that some actions are more moral than others. They realize that moral actions exist in a hierarchy, and that rape is far worse than stealing a pencil. Yet the Bible holds that all 'sins' are equal, as all deserve the same punishment.

Christians also realize that humans can be moral agents... they expect moral behavior from others, and they view their own children as something to value. Yet the Bible holds that man is worthless, that he cannot be a moral agent, and that his sole salvation comes from grace. However, since Christians realize, implicitly, that all of these these points are obviously, prima facie false, they must steal from secular systems, that hold that 1) man obviously has a value 2) all 'sins' are obviously not equivalent and 3) a person cannot be held to be doing anything 'immoral' without intent.

First of all, because we live in society and have to live by its rules. That doesn't make it wrong, but it's as good a reason to follow laws as any.

Second, atheists decide for themselves what is right and wrong. I think most of us (though I guess I shouldn't speak for everyone) believe that if something hurts someone, it shouldn't be done.

I don't care if anyone has an abortion, though, because I don't think it hurts anyone. A fetus is not a life, it's a parasite until its old enough to survive on its own without the mother.

The bible isn't "fake", per say, it's just not true. It was written to control the minds and body of the people of that time period. And it's still being used (abused ? ) for that purpose. And the bible is not the only book out there. Ever read the Tao Te Ching ? Bet you never even heard of it. Why do Christians think they only have the right religion ?

First of all, you're fallaciously assuming that there are two and only two possibilities: "Either my religion is correct about physics and biology and cosmology, or everything came about by random chance." You REALLY ought to read a few science books.

Second of all, well I'll just quote atheist James Randi:

"The assumption is, and it's such an insulting assumption, I get people asking me all the time, 'But if you don't believe in heaven and hell, why would you live a moral life?' What they're really saying in that statement is 'If I didn't have to fear hell, I would steal, I would rape, I would assault, I would kill. I would do all of those things that I just LOVE to do to some people and under some situtations. I'd get away with anything I could. But no, I fear going to hell and I want to go to heaven. Therefore, I go by the rules.' I find that so insulting."

How sad for you. Is your pastor the only reason you do not go rob the 7/11? Have you always been so brainwashed? Please get help soon, the bible is frying your brain..

I happen to think there is a God.

I think the buy-bull is man made fiction.

No one knows what started the earth or life, but it surely is not the account in that ludicrous fictional book full of b.s.

Any system of ethics must exist independently of the Bible, because the Bible contains many contradictory moral injunctions, and you have to choose which to believe, independently of the text. For example, the Bible instructs masters on how to treat their slaves, and it urges death by stoning upon unbelievers. If we think these things are wrong, or no longer apply, we must be using reasoning that comes from outside the Bible.

The development of ethical systems, independent of religion, is well established in philosophy.

Are you saying the only reason you DON'T go out murdering and stealing is you're afraid you're gonna get a whuppin' from your Invisible Sky Daddy? That's not being genuinely good -- that's being an onotological apple-polisher!

But to answer your question: as members of a community, we have this little thing called the "social contract" -- in a nutshell, I agree not to hurt or bother you, with the understanding that you won't try to hurt or bother me. It's how we all get along, and keeps us from having to struggle each other as well as the indifferent universe.

Wow. Is believing in God and the bible the only thing that keeps you from killing and aborting baby kittens with coathangers and ignoring right and wrong?

If so, you need lots and lots of prayers.
