When I shut down the car, the gps plugged into the cigarette lighter does not power off, even with the truck totally off. I assume this will drain the battery. Is there anyway to make the power source shut off when I shut the truck down? I really don't want to have to unplug the gps every time I shut the engine off.

Thanks

Doesn't your GPS have an on/off switch? My Garmin does, on the right side. It won't turn off by itself if the power jack is alive, but I can shut it off.

I'm pretty sure they all do.

It's designed this way on purpose. It's not a 'cigarette lighter' any more. They call it a 'power point'. It's on all the time because people usually use it to charge a cell phone, and Ford thought it would be handy if folks could charge a phone while the car was off.

To the best of my knowledge, you are stuck with unplugging your GPS when you shut the car off. You may want to try the power points in the back seating area. It's possible that they shut off when the engine is off. Of course, then you'd have to find a cord long enough to reach....

This will require re-wiring the outlet to switched ignition power. It may be possible to move the connector at the fuse box to a terminal marked "ignition" as opposed to "battery". A 12v test light from the local parts store will help- connected to a good ground (bare metal chassis or bolt) and tested by probing the backs of fuses. Do not connect to a circuit that supplies other accessories with a 10 Amp or less fuse. It should also have it's own 15 Amp fuse installed inline (20 Amp for 14-16 gauge wire)

As others have said, the power points are purposely made that way on these trucks...

To rewire it would be time consuming and having to rewire it from the fuse box etc etc.

I had a customer who wanted this for a radar detector. I got a cigar lighter socket and holder from NAPA for about $7, and wired it to the switched power feed on the ignition switch with a scotchlock wire splice. grounding it to the dash board ground. Secured under the dash hidden .. I ran the wire making for a pretty much hidden wire job (the only thing visable is the small amount of pigtail to the unit) and the unit powers off when I turn the key off.

hope this spurs an idea

I agree with jingman... The best thing to do, (if you're mechanically/electrically inclined) would be to remove there power from the "Cig. Lighter" and wire it to your Ignition Accessory cable, so when you turn you key to ACC. your light plug kicks on and thus turning it off when you turn your key all the way back... If you do it yourself you will need a wiring diagram of the ignition and a few solder points for best connections. I'd say if you do it yourself at a beginners rate it'll take you a Saturday maybe roll over to Sunday but like i said if you're good with things like this... maybe a few hours :)

That is the way that it is wired from the factory. You can either cut the wire that feeds the power point and add a switch and manually turn it off, if you want. Other than that you will have to change the feed to a circuit that is only on when the ignition is on. Try to do this at the fuse panel and then add an inline fuse to the circuit. Good luck with it.

I have the same question about my ford explorer 2016, I have to remember to unplug all devices when I lock the car, just thinking how ridiculously people design a car.

Thats the way it is supposed to work. The ciggarette lighter plug always stays on..... you should have a 12 volt power plug that does turn off when you turn off the ignition. My 06 has one on the back of the center console.

sounds like you have a add-on GPS, you should never leave it in the truck. this is inviting theft. I'll bet you leave your cell phone in there too. Sooner or later you'll have to repair a broken window $$$ :(
