To live. There is no grand purpose. Each person must find out what life means to them and pursue it.

Um...that seems a rather odd question. You're asking atheists (those who already believe that God doesn't exist) what the purpose of life would be if God didn't exist. To turn this around, this is kind of like saying 'Theists: What would be the purpose of life if God existed?' Get what I'm saying?

That said, as an atheist I believe that we humans, being conscious entities, are able to make our own purposes for ourselves, to set our own goals and ambitions and then try to achieve them. Ultimately, all of us are looking for maximum happiness in our lives, but some people have different preferences and therefore different ways of achieving happiness than other people. Of course it may also become possible to change our own preferences in the future, allowing us to set not only our goals but our reasons for setting them, so to speak, allowing us to further alter our own purposes. I hope that makes sense.

Whats the purpose of life to a gnu? or a millipede? or mouse?..

Religion is a man made thing. Designed by stone age people to explain the mysteries of the world the lived in. The fact that we can vocalize our thoughts has meant that through time there has been many "gods". God of this, god of that.

THEN, we decided to actually work out why things were the way they were.... thinking, you see?

The purpose of life is to keep on going, pro create and just try and be nice to each other.

You don't need a "god" to achieve any of those things.

To propagate copies of itself.

Why does there need to be a meaningful purpose? Why should that purpose make you feel good?

The above purpose of life is what we can actually see happening. It is the reality of the universe. If you have a problem coping with that then that is your problem, the universe does not care.

If you want to create your own purpose in life, more power to your elbow, go for it. But realize that you are doing it for yourself and not for any other reason.

what do you think the purpose of life is with god existing?

Worshipping your god? All you life? and then spending eternity worshipping your god? That is a worthwhile purpose to you?

the purpose of all life is to survive and procreate

Fortunately we're not mindless so we can make our own purpose

Don't you prefer having a little control over your life

Our purpose in life is to take care of those less fortunate, to treat people the way we want to be treated and to take care of our planet home. That is an honorable purpose and requires no gods.

Everything else that there is to enjoy in life. This list is endless so I'm not even going to start. Would you seriously see no reason to live if it turned out God was not real? If this is the case, it really confuses me that people who believe in God say they pity atheists.

what would be the purpose of life if God does exist?

I think in either case, from the most simple single cell entities to the complex humans, the purpose of life is to sustain life.

There's isn't any big purpose.

You get to decide what to do with your own life.

The purpose of my life is to teach, but not because I think it's any pre-destined higher purpose. I just think that's what I'm best at and that's what's needed right now.

Matt J: I wish I could give you more than one thumbs up. :) I'm tired of so many Christians acting like they are morally superior, when instead they just do whatever they want and then apologize for it. "Gays are going to hell, but I watch lesbian porn, and that's okay 'cause I can ask God's forgiveness!" Pfft.

The need to define a purpose for life is an expression of egocentrism. Just be, and be happy.
