Cats tend to like to be up high. I reccomend buying a high scratching post, that way your cat will only go up on the high scratching post, and not breaking your stuff.

Cats don't only live at floor level, they climb and like to be up high. You'll often notice them outside sitting on a garden wall or on top of a garage. Having a high look out post, means they don't feel vulnerable to sudden attack and being the curious creatures that they are, it offers them the opportunity to watch everything going on around at a safe distance.
As with all natural cat behaviour, the best way to train them is to offer them an acceptable alternative. Either buy him a cat jungle or allow him to sit on something tall like a book case, or even a small ladder.

Its the "pounce" thing which is fun for cats and kittens, but not so much fun for us pet owners! Try putting double sided sticky tape onto the edges of the furniture/ledges of where the cat is climbing and breaking things. I was advised this by another member on here and it really really does work - or the other is to put tin foil hanging over the edge, they HATE the noise and feel of foil, so after a couple of attempts they give up, then you can safely remove the foil as they wont go there again.

Cats like to be up high because they are small animals that can't always see everything from down on ground level. Also, when they are high up, it is safer for them. In our place, it is warmer up high too since heat rises. You should probably move everything you don't want knocked over and/or broke to a display case or cupboard with a door. For things you don't care about, you can get something called Museum Putty--it's nontoxic, mushy and you put it on the bottom of vases and thing, then stick them to the table surface (and it can be moved by you when you want). We use it to keep ceramic knickknacks and vases on shelves from flying around during earthquakes (and to keep them from getting knocked off by the cats). If it's bigger stuff, you can glue velcro patches to the underside of them and then to the shelf. But if it's something that you absolutely do not want to chance getting broken, move it to someplace that the cat cannot get to.

This is the cats advantage, look out point. They also like to hang out up on tree branches. They are out of the way, can observe their territory, spot prey and potential rivals.
Does he go outside in the garden? because he would normally be doing all this jumping and developing his muscle's and agility out there and come in tired at the end of the day.
If he does'nt go out prehaps you could invest in some cat nip mice or tall activity type scratching post and a cat nip spray.
Sounds to me like he's a healthy, active 8 month old, doing what cats do.
Hope this helps and sorry about your broken bits and bobs.

A cat is a hunter of other animals. Since it has limited speed compared with some of its predator relatives (the lion, the tiger, the bobcat, etc) it tends to pounce on its target victim. Pouncing is done from above. Therefore it seeks the higher place.

Cats like high places so they can watch what goes around easily, similar to sailors in a ship's crow's nest. It's a self-protecting instinct.
The only solution is to put obstacles on his path or fill the space with something that he can't move.

Its in a cat's nature to perch. My boy jumps onto the countertop, up onto the fridge, and then up on top of the cabinets. Kittens are going to be playful explorers, but as he ages he'll probably calm down. Sounds like you may have to cat-proof your home!

It's cats' natural instinct something to do with domination and authority therefore cannot be trained. Get some books or look up on the Internet about cats behaviour it will give you all the info you need.

my cat likes to be up high so he can look down at the dog and she cant reach him...but he did that before we had the dog, he's young still and exploring..my cat is only 10 months old, they are curious and very very nosey..they want to know what and where everything is..mine does anyway...doubt you will stop him doing it...move your breakables if you own a cat rule number one...especially a kitten / adolescent cat
