Cry out to God.
Wait upon God for his grace to come down, break through into your life, and then move you to a place of spiritual well-being. Once God starts to deal with you, he won't stop off until you are conformed to the likeness of his dear Son. It's all of grace, and all of God.

Christianity cuts you in two. It causes you to look inside instead of out. A division happens: your mortal being and your spiritual being. The spirit examines and guides.
So the first thing is realizing. Just that: realizing. That you can't be god in your own life, that there's something wrong that you can't fix, that you need help beyond what this world can offer.
This, then causes you to cry out. To....whatever they call Jesus or God. You speak....He hears...no doubt.
People will tell you to pray a certain prayer but I say to you that at the point you cry out, the Holy Spirit is there instantly and He makes that connection between you and Jesus. He causes you to say what you should say.
Inevitably, what you say is 'forgive me', 'please be my Lord', 'clean me up and make me one of Yours', 'please come into my life'.
The facts: when you reach out to Jesus in that way, He never fails to bring you into Him, while He comes into you. Your eyes are suddenly open to so many things. There is a sudden, insatiable hunger for everything that might inform you about God and you begin to read the Bible. There's a difference now. The Holy Spirit is now with you always and you have new eyes for the Bible, a new way of understanding what you read.
This is when the devil moves in with a vengeance. Until this time, he had no reason to worry about you but now he does.
After the first few exciting months, the devil will move in and start the old 'doubt' game. Playing with your mind. Doing everything he can to convince you that you were just dreaming and this isn't a true thing. That you've been duked into believing something unbelievable.
When that time comes, remember my words. Say this outloud to the devil, "I don't belong to you any more. Get your filthy hands off my mind". It will stop immediately.
Find a church to be among others who are like you. Mutual support helps to keep you going toward Jesus.
That's not to say that every church building contains only super spiritual like minds. Church is full of the devil just as the streets.
When you run into trouble and are confused, it's time for what we call 'the prayer closet'. That's your little secret place of total peace and aloneness. Here, you ask the Holy Spirit whatever you want. Always open and honest with Him, as He is called the Sweet One. He is gentle and will not stay where there is not truth. Don't lie to Him, you have no secrets. Let it all out and He will show you the way.
Jesus made a contract with believers and He does not fail that contract. He said, "If my words abide in you, and you abide in me, ask the Father what you WILL and it will be given unto you." That's a contract.
He's one word away. All you have to do is take the first step. He will take all the rest.

The first step is recorded in Romans 10:9
Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
The next step is something that there seems to be confusion on. Some people seem to think that it is abstaining from sin. Some think that it is going to church. Some seem to think that it's getting a haircut. Some seem to think that it is to criticize all of those people who aren't doing what they think they should be doing.
What the next step is actually to draw closer to Jesus. After we have done that, draw closer to him still. You see, the closer we are to Jesus, the more all of these other things will take care of themselves.

The first step is to realize and admit that you are in a lost unsaved state. Then you sincerely repent of your sins, get baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of those sins and then receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:38) and continue to live a holy life.

The first essential step is to select a denomination. Use the internet, or buy a "Handbook of Christian Denominations," and find the one that you like best. Then, locate their nearest chapter, and make an appointment to talk to their designated clergy. After that, the details will vary depending on the denomination. (The steps outlined by the poster above me apply to Born-Again/Evangelical denominations.)

The very first step to becoming a christian is to realize you need a saviour. that you cant do this on your own. And you know that you want a saviour. so you pray this Oh Lord, I know I need a saviour. Would you be my savior? I want you and I want to live for you. FOrgive me of my sins and I will do them no more Forgive me Lord, and I will live for you forever. Come into my heart Lord and show me the way. I need you, all of you. Please some into my heart now. You say that and you must mean it, remember God knows your heart> This is called the sinners prayer. You simply know you need a saviour and you pray for one, knwoing you must confess your sins and turn from them, and that you are willing to submit your will to His will and live without sin.
The only way we can do that is by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. BEcuse of His shed blood upon that cross, we can be saved, and He gives us power to be overcomers over sin. we must obey as Jesus obeyed the Father. then it all just comes. Get your Bible out, study to know it, not just read it. Stay in prayer , and live as God commands you to live.
There you go, and the rest will just come to you. The more you hunger for GOd and all of His truths, being willing to do it HIS way, the more will come to you. Blessings come from obedience. disobeience leads to curse.
I count it all as joy. NOt even hard to say no to sin, becuase when you submit your will to His will, you find sin is as ugly and vile to you as it is God, and the more you walk in the spirit, the more God can show you ways to allow Him to work within to change you. God has chagned me so much. and I know He is continuing to show me more daily. I hunger for it and thrist for it, and I love His rebuke, as HE shows me so much within me that I still need help with. God is faithful to finnish the good work in us that He has begun.
May you all run to Jesus today.
