I have a small kitchen with cabinets from the mid 80's they are a dark oak color and you can feel the grain in them, the were partial painted with killz. I have 13 doors 4 of them small, 6 drawers and 2 fake drawers with no handles and do not open. i also have 1 lazy susan on the corner that rotates open, doesn't side.

I have heard there is a great range in pricing and it is easy to get ripped off and pay way too much.

I also need to cut corners and save money, like buy my own pulls, hinges, and doors if I could even match up the color.

I hear people can do it themselves, and apply the facing but this might be too hard. Is the a website that can explain this process as well?

Just to mention they were painted with killz and are white and I want to reface them a cherry color.

I hear prices like two grand to have it done. However if its something like 5-10k I might just by cabinets at home depot or direct, would be much cheaper then.

In general it is about half the price of replacing them (and a lot less mess in your home).

You can get a place like Sears or Home Depot to come in and give you an estimate. I have seen some good work done by them and they always have some kind of discount or some accessories they throw in to sweeten the deal.

If you are handy you can buy doors or get real-wood veneers that fit your own on-site door measurements. There are websites that explain the process including videos showing how to do it step-by-step.

Getting your own hardware works out great because places like Expo and Home Depot have a great selection at cheaper prices. Get their template for installation also. It lines up the parts and keeps you from costly location goofs.

Its just my opinion, but wouldn't it be a whole lot more cost efficient to just sand all the fronts to knock down the grain, and then prime and paint them. You could really do the whole thing in a weekend, not even that long if you can find a buddy to lend you a hand. Also, there are many other options to refacing that are way cheaper. Actually, you can wallpaper any insets in the doors and add a decorative wood accent to the center, or even, glue tin ceiling tiles to the fronts with construction adhesive (all you'd have to do is cut and paste), and I'm not talking about something crappy, I'm talking about some nice ideas I read about in a decorating book - I think it was called 301 Decorating Ideas, or something, some of it was really sharp. Before you spend a lot of money check out some DIY books. Even if you do decide to reface at least you'll have a better idea of what should be done and the cost as well, you may be able to do some of the prep work yourself to cut done on the cost, too.

PS: the book is called Better Homes and Gardens 301 Decorating Projects and Ideas, and there is a section in it where a lady did a paint technique (the book tells you how to do it) on her walls (wood panel and armoire) that is just beautiful, that I think would fit nicely and be just what you're looking for! check this out:

You can do this. I refaced my cabinets with doors from home depot. I had the top doors ordered with glass and the bottom doors and drawers were in stock. I would recommend taking a good look at your current doors and try to get new doors that are hung with the same type of hinges. That will make the job alot easier. You may even be able to use the old hinges. The base of my cabinets were already white so I purchased white doors. I would recommend painting the base of yours white and purchasing the white doors. That way you don't have to worry about matching the wood. You may need to clean the white more often but it's worth it. Good luck.

the refacing can be done in different ways 1st is to buy new doors and draw fronts than a veneer facing for the cabinet stiles and rails, remember to match the woods of the new doors and draw fronts with the right veneer for the box fronts.
This can be a do it yourself project but remember your trial and error can cost you double were a professional will do it once on you and if a second time is needed he will eat it. remember that anything is possible with wood. I would not recommend trying to remove the paint this is a long, dirty, process unless you have a big vat of paint remover and you can soak the parts in it for a period of time. I would try and find a cheep set of new cabinets or have new doors and draw fronts built. PS by the sounds of the wood grain being felt on the old doors they are made of soft wood and ideal cabinetry is hard wood doors and draw fronts.

It sounds like you are capable of doing work by yourself, so I would recommend you remove the doors/drawers and hardware. Buy some paint remover and start stripping. It's very easy to do. Also use a hand sander to remove remaining spots the remover left. This also preps the surface for you to apply the stain color. Then you'll want to apply a clear coat, of which there are many choices to select. Talk to your paint retailer. Follow the same steps on the framing etc. still on the wall. You should mask off the walls with blue painters tape b/4 stripping.

If you are just changing the doors and drawer fronts that is not refacing. Refacing is you cover gables door frames if you have framed cabinets, kick plate ect, this is one MESSY JOB. I worked as a refacer for years, it,s a rip off you can buy a whole new kitchen for what these rip off artist charge. that way you can redisne you kitchen stay AWAY from HOME DEPOT they hire outside guys to do the work "CROOKS" go to a small cabinet shop and get a price , better qualitiy better price than the knock down trash HOME DEPOT sell.
