This is an extremely open-ended question, as they're are many different types of dark beers. If it is a stout you are looking for, the stupid cooch who said only women can by Guiness is full of s-h-i-t- and should have her boobs hacked off. Guiness is a very full, well-rounded Irish Stout and is well worth the purchase. There is a new dark stout out called Lion from Sri Lanka. That, and Mackeson (from England) are both awesome stouts with strong hints of chocolate, almost like a dessert beer. Try some Belgian darks like Nostradamus for a hint of black licorice, without the overbearing taste. Warsteiner out of Germany makes an awesome dark beer, but the aftertaste can be troublesome. If it's money you're trying to save, try Amberbock, it's taste is pleasant with some aftertaste, but you won't blow your wad buying it. Hope I've been a help.

Guinness is probably the best dark beer anyone can buy, but I would also add that you ought to try Murphy's Irish Stout as a comparisson. Both are excellent representatives of the Irish beers.
Also, if you are on the East coast, I would definitely recommend trying a Yuengling Black and Tan.
Finally, I have become a fan of the amber/red ales. There is one from the Flying Bison Brewing Company (Buffalo, NY microbrew) called "Aviator Red" that is really good, and really smooth. It's dark, but not too dark. It's just right.

I love Shiner Bock -its brewed in Texas with a German heritage, I"m not sure if it truly counts as a dark beer, bur it sure tastes good. Of course, Warstiener Dark is great and still stands as my favourite...but I am a woman, so I'm not sure what a man can buy that is different...

Best dark beer is Rochefortt Trappistes 10. EXCELLENT beer, only downfall is that it comes in an 8 ounce bottle due to its potency.

"Beer" is such broad catagory but I like the Belgian ales like those produced by Chimay and the Stouts like the ones produced by Samuel Smith's and Watney's breweries. One of my favorite porters which I can't seem to find anymore came from Boulder Beer it was a Black Cherry Porter and it was delicious.
