To the extent no-one is harmed, why is it considered wrong to behave according to our instincts/upbringing?

Because the denial of basic, universal pleasures is a classic cult tactic, and people completely deprived of sex (or similar things) are easier to brainwash/manipulate.

It's not pretty, but it's the truth. The same logic lies behind fasting and other deprivations mandated by religions/cults, most of the time.

The bible teaches very limited chastity. Nothing is wrong with having the desires or acting on them, the key is when to act on them and with who is the moral question raised in the Bible.

In answer to Hogie. I have been living with my partner for seven years - neither he nor I wanted to be married because we felt it would be hypocritical given our feelings on the church.
We are both faithful, caring and loving towards one another and we have a lot more respect for one another than married couples I know. So let's can the rubbish about sex only being right within marriage okay?

Key phrase:
"according to our up-bringing and natural instincts."
It sounds like you're interested in living on the animal level, with mankind's most base motivations.

Living according to God's laws raises humans above the animals, through the wonderful gift of self-control.

It certainly is more "against nature" than adultery of any kind, which is all over the place in the animal kingdom.

Then again, many species have asexual members (e.g. insect colonies), so I'm probably wrong.

Hogie, your claim is total BS. Marriage has no monopoly on sexual happiness - nor does the lack of marriage on abusive relationships.

The Bible promotes people being chaste until marriage; a union where neither one is harmed, physically, emotionally, psychologically, or spiritually.

Try as you might, you cannot make this claim outside of marriage.

because the bible says you ought to crucify your flesh (not physically as christ did for us) but spiritualy. our physical crucifiction is abandoning all imoral actions such as sex out of marriage, lusting someones wife etc - this crucifies our flesh- when the flesh is crucified it helps us be closer to God, we have less time to think about what we could be doing, and more time to think about lliving our lifes as spotless as possible. when you act on your instincts you are liable to do ANYTHING because thats what your flesh wants. when you live spiritualy as jesus did, you have no need for things that cater to your animalistic instinct. ♥
