I was told that I could give my dog childrens benedryl for an allergic reaction. I was also told that I could give him a little more than what to give a child. I'm not sure of what age group to use or how long to use it. I want serious repies please.

Unless the person who told you that was a vet, I wouldn't believe him. Pets can be very sensitive to things that don't bother us....you could cause serious harm when all you wanted to do was help.

The general dose is 1mg/lb, but this can vary depending on your dog's breed, metabolism and severity of the allergic reaction. (I give my 50 lb. Australian Shepherd 50mg of Benedryl for her allergic reactions.)
Check with a vet - you can usually just call the office for this type of information and they can ask all the proper questions at that time.
Whatever you do though, DO NOT give your dog Children's versions of medications. Use the adult formulas. Children's medications often have additives that buffer the medication making it less effective for your pet.
Dogs have strong stomachs, they can handle the adult meds.

Our puppy had a severe allergic reaction to an antibiotic.
My vet informed me that the dosage is 1mg per 1lb.
So for our 72lb Yellow Labrador, we gave her 3 25mg pills.

However, dogs metabolize medication differently than humans. And every dog is going to be different. Prior to giving your pet anything, i'd get an ok from your vet.

None without the advice of a vet first. It may not be an allergic reaction so you have to be sure. If it is the vet will tell you how much and how often.

I WAS told by my vet that you can. My dog is allergic to grass...ya grass. She is a Poochi (Poodle Chicuauhua), and i have to give her 1/2 of a regular benadryl. She is only 10lbs. But DO NOT give it to them on a regular basis. Every once in a while it is okay, but giving it to them on a regular basis will damage their liver, just like anyone else.

And Yes, My Vet DID tell me this. I would consult your vet though on how much depending on the weight of your dog.

The best place to get an answer here is from your vet. Tho, I assume your vet did not suggest this, or he/she would have already told you a proper dosage for your dogs size.

Call the vet, this is not something you should take "just anyone's" opinion on.

You were told by who???? Only a vet can give you serious answers to these types of questions. Human meds are generally not good for animals, and dosage depends on the size of the pet. Most children weigh more then most dogs, so that advice sounds incorrect.

Personally, I wouldn't give my dog anything unless my vet told me I could.

Call your vet and ask him -- a phone call is free, a mistake could be costly.

You should talk to a vet before doing something like this. They will have the best answer for you.
