I woke up today to find my 11 pound jack russel had chewed up a thermometer. It was about three inches long, and an inch around. I think I was able to find most of the glass, but I am sure some of it was ate. Also, what are the chances of her getting mercury poisoning from this? Should I try feeding her a cotton ball (apparently it says that collects sharp objects), or bread ... or something? I'm actually mostly worried about the mercury.

You dog does not have mercury poisoning, unless the thermometer is very, very old. They havent made thermometers with Mercury for at least 20 years, and probably more like 30, due to it being so toxic, that it was a real danger having people put it in glass in their mouths. That being said, the glass, if your dog got some in its stomach, can kill your dog. Get it to the vet on an emergency basis, and be ready for a huge bill to get it taken out- probably well over $1000.

I'm assuming you're in the US, sorry if I'm wrong. They phased out mercury thermometers long ago, how old is the thermometer? Even if it IS mercury, your dog may be able to be treated as they even used it form medicinal purposes (to unblock the GI tract) years ago. To be o the safe side, take the dog to the nearet Vet, and take the thermometer and they'll advise you on what to do from there. Good luck, I hope your Jack turns out to be ok.
