Assume you mean "Confirmation Sponsor", not 'communion' sponsor, your job is making sure the one you sponsor is properly schooled in the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church.

You will attend the Confirmation ceremony with the candidate you are sponsoring, and stand at his side as the Bishop confirms him in the Catholic Faith.

It is doubtful that you will be as effective as you should be if "vague ideas" are the summation of your knowledge of Catholicism. It looks as though you will need to do a little self-(re)education before you can properly see to your cousin's religious education.

Also consider - if you want to be your cousin's sponsor - you MUST be an active Catholic. This means, in it's simplest terms, attending weekly Mass. I'm guessing you probably have some catching up to do with Reconciliation.

This is what you must do if you truly want to be the best sponsor you can be. There's probably more to it than you originally anticipated but do it. You will benefit from it as well as your cousin.

To be a proper confirmation sponsor, your job is to make sure Aldo is fully prepared to be confirmed, which means checking on his studies, helping him study, answering his questions (or finding an answer together if you don't know the answer) and encouraging him to grow in the Catholic faith.

This might be a wee bit difficult if you aren't really practicing your Catholic faith.

If you really want to do it properly, I suggest you call your parish priest (or Aldo's) and ask if you can get a "refresher" course in catechism for adults, so that you are learning what Aldo is learning and you can be a good sponsor for him. In the U.S., this course is called RCIA and it's free.

Being a sponsor is an honor -- I applaud you for wanting to do the best job you can.

Well you dont really have to do much, just be a good friend to him. Phyically all you have to do is be right there behind him while he is getting confirmed. I'm assuming you meant confirmation coz I dont remember having a sponser for my communtion.

Yes, it's kind of like a godmother. You are saying "I will be a spiritual role model for this person". Truthfully, it typically doesn't require much.
