Just last week, I had my first tattoo done on my lower back - and yes it hurt like hell. But the artist decided not to finish off the rest of the design that had to be done as the first half hour into the tattoo, I nearly past out. However I really want to go back and have the rest of it done but I am a bit apprehensive. To me the pain was like someone running razor blades across my back. And yes I have been through child birth and at the time I would rather go throught that again. But I went on my own to get my first tattoo done, and am considering taking a frined with me next time. What are your thoughts on numbing cream. Can it affect the ink? Does your body go into some sort of shock??

Taking someone with you definitely is a good idea. Let your tattooist know that you might need more breaks in between so you can relax and walk around. Also take some snacks. Your body is releasing a lot of endorphins to kill the pain so you can get fatigued faster. I always go with my fiance to his appts and keep him company. Ask you tattooist to put on some music you can relax to. I wouldn't do numbing cream. If something were to happen to the design then you went through all this for nothing. I know it sucks bad, but I'm sure it'll be awesome in the end! Good Luck!

Numbing creams don't affect the ink or make your body go in to shock, there are plenty of people who do use numbing creams. Me personally wouldn't use them at all, I do agree with you to take a friend, it does help to have somebody you know to relax and distract you when getting tattooed. Hope it's not too painful for you when you finally decide to get it done. -x-x-

don't use numbing cream, it can affect the texture of your skin and possibly the outcome of your tattoo. bring a friend to talk to or some music to listen to or a book to read, something to occupy your mind besides the pain. i have had a lot of tattoo work and it has all hurt, some much more than others but it's all bearable. you just have to find something that will allow you to relax.

numbing creams are generally speaking nothing more than lidocaine which can affect the colour. the best thing to do is just grit your teeth and bear it. ive sat through countless hours of work. my forearms took 8 hours and i did it all in one siting. after about the first 30-45 mins the nerves sort of shut down and it begins to feel like more of a burn than razors. just rememebr pain may be a small price to pay if the tatt is important to you.

People tend to get used to the "pain". For first timers, it is the hype about the pain that causes it to be amplified. I have a customer who created a lot of drama doing his first tattoo. Now he is into his 10th tattoo, and getting more adventurous too. He seems to love the sensation now. If you are still terrified, go and talk to your artist and see if he uses any of those topical pain relievers. However please be informed that it may cause more bleeding and so causes it to be more difficult to put in the ink.

my thoughts are you cant have numbing cream on you when you get a tattoo. call whoever did your tat and ask them. it has to be on a clean smooth surface. i hope to God you are right about the " you would rather give birth then get a tat on your lower bacK" im giving birth in Feb, and if i can handle a big lower back tat i can handle that!

Some artist use Elma
for pain relief, but it only
last about 20 or 30 minutes.
There is also Lidocaine, but
most artist stay away from that.
It can cause swelling, or bleeding.
Talk to your artist about ways
to distract yourself ...trust me
he's good at it.

THAT $H!T DONT WORK!!!! LET YOUR TATTOO HEAL AND CALM DOWN, AND IM SURE REGARDLESS OF THE PAIN YOU WILL GO BACK TO THAT PAINFUL PLEASURE.
BUT THE LOWER BACK IS THE WORST PLACE AND I GUESS IT WASNT THE BEST PLACE TO GET UR FIRST ONE.
JUST GO BACK, YOU DONT WANT UR TATTOO TO LOOK STUPID.
