I heard an argument against science being just a guess that it constantly corrects itself, isn't this better than something that never does (apart from the new testament, but 2000 years guys, change the record)

Because their blind faith makes them incapable of thinking for themselves, thus seeing their religion for what it truly is... that's okay though- natural selection will weed them out- eventually. :)

science is willing to look at things from every possible angle and openly admit if they were wrong about a previous thought/theory etc.
science constantly works to learn = understanding.

religion has a one way or the highway view. they feel they pretty much got everything right the first time, that's their story and they're sticking to it.

I guess you could say the church does rarely correct itself though. y'know, like saying priests raping little kids mighta not been a good idea. so for that they should get a smiley face sticker and a pat on the back.

Most Christians don't oppose science - just some fundies.

As for science - at the research level, it does correct itself - that is a part of scientific method - scientists propose explanations of natural phenomena and then test their theories through observation and experimentation. It the research does not support their theories, then the theories must be revised - "self correction." You don't see this in science class because you have to learn a lot of well established information before you get to the research level.

Christianity or the Bible does not dismiss science, we only dismiss fables that are given in the name of science. There are many proven facts in science and I believe in them, then there are other things that are just theories, often with gaping holes within them, and those I do not accept as blind fact.

On the other hand many Christians can misinterpret the Bible and offer teachings that are not true... these too can cause people to stumble.

On both sides, once people are indoctrinated into their belief system, they are often too proud to admit they are wrong or stand in need of correction... so the errors continue, and often artificial conflicts between science and religion are created.

Anyone,Christian or not, with any awareness knows that science is so much more than just an educated guess. But for Christians its not the " be all, end all".We (and by "we" I mean conservative Christians with at least a degree of education) hold the Bible as our source of wisdom for faith and life. We don't park our brains at the church door; we don't accept everything blindly; but we live a life of faith in a God who is there, who is alive, and who loves us all.

Because they see their religion not as a 'guess' at all, but rather as - the DEFINITIVE and final answer. So, to them there is no comparrison. Your point is well taken and poignant - that religion is a wild guess with no evidence for its claims, while science is an educated guess that continually corrects its answers as new evidence comes to light.

Heh.

It always amazes me how people can claim that education is a bad thing, without knowing they are doing it.

My heart tells me that Leprechauns might exist and that they love me, but education convinces me not to spend my life looking for the pot of Gold at the end of the Rainbow.

science and religion are perfect adversaries of war and debate....because there isnt an apparent link to between them. But every other spirituality movement accept this except for christianity....why you say? because it can disprove alot of things mentioned in the bible......but science denies the existance of spirit - PERIOD. Because they do not posess the intruments and faculties to measure or study the spirit....its a loosing debate - like the chicken and the egg...so its pointless - if it accomplishes nothing

I do not say science makes a guess. They have proved many things, although nothing that goes against God.They also have a long way to go,they can not explain a dream,a coma, they
study hard trying ti find our soul.Archeology is science and it proves the Bible daily.

Because we trust God more than man. Man does not have all the answers and science is still evolving. We learn something new every day in science, but God's word has remained constant since the beginning of time.

Not only is religion a guess, it's a guess that nobody can prove or disprove.

Not an answer, just an observation.
