The M4 fires a 5.56mm round and an AK-47 fires a 7.62mm round. Bigger round? Bigger bang. AK-47 wins hands down.

Don't confuse the AK-47, however, with the AK-74, which fires a 5.45mm round, making it "quieter" than an M4.

The Ak-47 is louder, but not by much. A lot of people will exagerate. I find this is usually because they've been on the business end of an AK and not actually fired both.

The M4 but when you hear a M4 it's in your hand or in the guy's right next to you. The AK-47 is downrange a few meters.

Just messing, it's been awhile since I heard both at a range but I think it was the AK that was louder.

The AK-47 has a very unique sound to it which can be differentiated over most other weapons of its' kind, however, the decibel level is higher on an M4.
