Different breeds fit different lifestyles. I suggest doing some on-line research as well as visiting your local animal shelter/Humane Society. If you are active and want a dog that you can take jogging with you then check out active breeds or if you have children then you'll want to search dogs that are good with children. Also, do not rule out mutts most often mixed breeds make the best pets! Happy puppy shopping! Oh, and don't rule out older dogs either. Have fun!
PS I just got a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Jack is only 11 weeks and a ball of energy!

It really depends on your lifestyle:
If you go outside a lot and are looking for an active dog that isn't aggressive and is very loving and loyal then a Labrador Retriever is a good dog for you.
If all the above applies to you however you want a guard dog that can be aggressive toward strangers than a German Shepherd is a good dog for you.
If you would like a low-key dog that doesnt need much excersize than a smaller dog is good for you. Mabye an American Eskimo Dog is good for you.
Hope this helps!

Everyone has a best breed that would would fit them better than another but we would need to know more about your living, work, activity level situations.
Do your research before bringing any animal home, you are taking on a committment and you owe it to that animal that you are going to be able to provide it the best life possible. Before rushing into things, be sure to read up on the animal/breed that you are interested in getting.

The best breed for me might not be the best breed for you!
Doberman Pinscher
As for the best type of animal to get... that depends on the time you have and the time you are willing to to put into one. Some animals need more care and/or training than others. The best one is the one that suits your lifestyle and your lifestyle will not impose neglect on the animal. (JMO)

I would say lab, although it depends on your family and needs. Love Bull Mastiffs, but they are huge and can be troublesome if you have a lot of visitors.
Dogs are the best.
