In the book 1984, George Orwell wrote about a society that is constantly overseen by a higher authority. This higher authority will like to know everything you do. Spy cameras are laid at every corner of the city and everyone and every movement is literally observed by Big Brother. This is rather uncomfortable as it encroached into a person's life.

Do you think there can be an advantage if secret cameras and secret microphones are installed in every corner of the streets? By doing this, it will give the local authorities full knowledge of what is happening.

Should a crime be commited in the darkest corner in the back alley, it can be recorded and the culprits apprehended.

Likewise, a robbery can be recorded by the public camera and the law enforcement can take the neccessary action. Legal disputes can also be resolved more easily should an event be recorded in camera. Who knows? Perhaps the London bombers can also be apprehended earlier if some sensor could detect they were carrying bombs.

Do you think Big Brother technology is not so disadvantageous after all?

Just my humble opinion here...but most who oppose "surveillance" do so only because maybe they're afraid of getting caught doing something wrong.

The use of video surveillance has solved too many crimes that would have otherwise gone unsolved.

People oppose traffic cameras that catch those who neglect to consider other driver safety at intersections. Is that "tyranny" as one respondent suggests....no! That's just protecting the law abiding citizens who have a right to walk, shop, or drive within the communities they live and work in.

Cameras in banks don't seem to bother people as they have a vested interest in the protection of their money.

I see no difference in the public safety aspect of camera surveillance.

I think the use of the traffic cameras is ok, as all that is doing is attempting to keep drivers honest. But cameras and microphones everywhere? I would hate that!

Privacy is huge...I love mine as do most other people in the world.
