The sun, moon and stars that were created by god (in genesis) were not the sun, moon and stars as we know them... they were small lights whose movements were controllled by machinery in heaven, which was operated by angels. The sky was a solid object... a crystalline dome that coverd the flat earth... and heaven was 'on the other side' of the sky. (This accounts for why God got his panties in a knot over the tower of Babel, and how Jesus was able to 'ascend into heaven'... it was not that far away... it was just above the clouds... on the other side of the sky.)

The stars (which god put there so that man could tell the future) had fixed positions... but some of the 'stars' moved around. They were called planets... which means 'wandering stars'. Meteors were 'falling stars'.

The planets 'formed' because god 'poofed' them existence, along with all the couple thousand other little tiny lights that he placed just above the clouds, on the inside of the dome that comprised the whole universe. So... there's you answer... magical 'poofy' powers.

Here, in the REAL universe (NOT the one that was created by 'god')... we know better. Here, in OUR universe, there are over 200 billion stars in our galaxy alone... not just the measly few thousand that can be seen by the naked eye from earth... the little tiny lights in the sky that 'god' magically poofed into existence. AND... there are over 100 billion OTHER galaxies in the 'visible' universe... and untold billions MORE galaxies in the parts of the universe that we CAN'T see.

(Are you beginning to get an idea why atheists think that biblical 'creationism' is droolingly stupid... along with the people who believe in it?)

dewcoons... they theory of planet formation you described is about 200 years out-of-date. Is it that long since you've been in school... or, (more likely) were you home-schooled?

According to the Bible they were created by God. The exact process or procedure by which he did it is not given. It does say that he spoke and they came into being. But that is a "poetic" way of saying it was done by his power and authority, and not necessary a stating of the "method" used. (You are aware that Genesis 1 is a poem in the original language...)

In Genesis 1, the earth is seen to be in existence prior to the formation of the sun. This would agree with current scientific thinking which as planets formed by material that breaks away from stars (suns) during their formation. The material would often "ball", cool and be in orbit before the star completes it birthing process. So planets would actually be in existence prior to the star around which they would orbit.
