The person that said 90% of famous artists don't work with a voice teacher is naive and doesn't know the real industry. If unrealistic American Idol has a vocal coach on hand to train pretty good singers who made it through, if TV shows like Making of the Band has a vocal coach on hand with the label, wouldn't the REAL WORLD without a camera be even more in depth as far as training? Mariah Carey's mother was her voice teacher (she was an opera singer), Whitney Houston's mother trained her (she was a professional back up singer), Usher, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkston, all of these artists had professional voice training. Most people will not record you until you've done work with one, and it shows in a performance. Unless you are some sort of screamer of grunge (your vocal career will come short doing that), if you want to be considered a professional you will work with a vocal coach in some way, shape or form. Even in the pop industry. If you want to be a theatrical or opera singer, you will train vigorously throughout your whole career working with one. So please don't listen to that advice. Even the ones who aren't considered great vocalists had voice training so they wouldn't sound like nails on a chalkboard. LOL! So don't believe that. THERE ARE NO WEBSITES OR BOOKS THAT CAN REPLACE A VOICE TEACHER. Voice teachers cater to your specific problems. Websites and books can't do that. Plus, they aren't going to give away all the info they know because of greed. They want you coming back for more.
A voice teacher is like a personal trainer, art teacher, a professor who teaches that upcoming doctor how to operate during surgery. They are the ones who take raw instruments with potential and cultivate them into great singers. I cannot tell you the worth my first voice teacher was when I first started. I was able to win competitions, get into music schools and scholarships, all kinds of things that I couldn't vocally do on my own she taught me how to do it. People often think good singers are good because they are naturally good. This isn't true. A good athlete has vigorous training, and so does a good singer. Our job as a singer is to make it look easy, so people think singing comes easy. It really doesn't. It is so much more to singing than people realize. So if you are having problems producing on your own like many of us, the only way to make it better is to hire a voice teacher.
Make sure the teacher has good credentials, and that you are making progress. If they don't have these things, find another one. There are fake voice teachers parading like they know the mechanics of voice. You'll know a good voice teachers by their fruit the first day you walk in. So call around to arts academies and private studios, do your research. Ask how much they charge, what is their experience and degree specialization. You have the right to know these things. Get a mock or starter lesson beforehand to see if you and the teacher have chemistry. I promise you a good voice teacher is NOT a waste of money. If it wasn't for my vocal coaches, I wouldn't have a career, and many of your favorite artists wouldn't have one. Go for it and you will be awestruck at the improvements just after a couple of lessons! Trust me!

You will need a competent Voice Teacher to help you understand how the entire body is involved in the singing process. One of the greatest mistakes new singers make is to not get training. They may think, "I either have it or I don't". What if you decided to play the Clarinet? Would you just "expect" to take it home and know how to play it? Of course not.
My own voice was not at all a good singing instrument when I started in High School. After I got proper training and kept performimg my exercises, I became a competent soloist. Proper singing is very challenging physically and mentally. I hope you will get training.
If you can't find or afford a private teacher, the best ebook I know is found at http://vocaltraingingwarrior.com/ebooks1
Good luck!

A vocal coach can be very helpful if you have a voice to work with. You definitely want to do your research to find a good one or yes it will be a waste of money. You should keep in mind though, 90% of artists out there have had no formal training so its not necessary. You can search on the internet for breathing excercises and little tips that could also help. So before paying money to someone look around the net and see what you can find. I have included a link that you may find helpful.

well, you may not think that you have any people to ask, but the best way is word of mouth. but you MUST ask people who know - people in the music buisiness. if you are still at school, adk your director of music - he or she will know. you can also get an unbiassed opinion if you ask a singing teacher who is unable to take you, due to having too many students. i think the best way to go is to start by learning classical. this way you will learn proper technique, and it is less likely that you will damage your vocal chords through misuse. after that, you can branch out to whatever you like - chances are that after a few years of singing, your and your voice teacher will have figured out whatstyle you best suited to.
