which type of ship?
I mean all together all the seaworthy vessels in the US Navy would be over a thousand. Of course, that would include tugs, maintance ships and such. I am sure the exact number is classified.

About 337. This is an old figure and they are alway getting new ships and selling off old ships. So the guy who shows 278 could be more correct.

counting in the supply ships, yard tugs, ocean tugs, oilers and all that
278 is right....with retirement and decommissioning, we will be down to 212 by 2020.
ships that actually shoot things: 13 carriers, 50 odd destroyers, a rapidly diminishing number of cruisers, no more frigates; 45 subs.......
in 1985 we had 603.
