No and of course it's a nonsense, so top marks for posting this question and here have a star!

Whilst Sociology is decried as being common sense, some of the very best work on crime is done by criminologists who are Sociologically trained. And any 'O' level Sociology student will tell you that most people who are the victims of crime are the victims of crime perpetrated by members of their race; it's an often recited fact for serial killers - Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the few who killed those who weren't members of his own race, but gets lost in translation in the tabloid media when it comes to other crimes.

There is no such thing as 'Black on Black gun crime' in the same way that paedophilia is not described as 'White on White child sex crime' or white collar theft is described as 'White on White white collar crime' or the Krays and Richardsons were, 'White on White gang crimes'. But it's just part and parcel of the need for the media/police to 'racialise' crime ('honour killings' are another) . It serves no purpose. In fact it is unhelpful; it puts a spin on a crime which is just that, a crime. As James M rightly points out, murder is just murder.

***EDIT*** I have nothing against Americans - half my relatives are American and I lived there for six months myself. However, sorry but the Americans who have posted here aren't helping this debate. It's obvious they don't know about the Met's special police task group for 'Black on Black Gun Crime' nor do they actually know what happens in the UK in terms of crime. All gun crime put together (Black and White and all other groups) is outnumbered more than two and half times by knife crime, so why would they need a specialist Black gun crime unit?

**EDIT 2** Bear, I think you're missing the point. Why is there a section for just 'Black on Black' crime. To make an even finer point of it, what is it about this 'Black on Black' crime which is different from 'White on White' crime. Why is the race of the perpetrator an issue? Surely crime is crime? And why does this racial description of crime not apply to any other crime? The overwhelming majority of crime in my city is committed by White men, White paedophiles, White bank robbers, White murderers. Why has there never been a description on 'White on White' crime? I think, to put it mildly, you you may just be missing a trick if you think there are no crime patterns for other ethnicities!

I have never seen such a section. The only times I have heard about the "black on black crimes" was in college and from the NAACP.

I can understand your point of view but black on black far exceeds anything else.

In my local city the vast majority of gang members are young black males. This is a fact because we compiled all the gangs and gang memebers in order to target them. All the gangs are involved in the supply of drugs. All have access to firearms in some way or other. I've lost count of the number of shootings between these rival gangs. I don't see any other pattern from the other ethnic groups.

Maybe black on black crime is such a massive problem that it needs an entire unit devoted to it

I've always thought that murder was murder regardless of the race of the killer or killed, and so the role of operation Trident seems to hold black on black killing as something unique, which it isn't. It's murder pure and simple, and to treat it differently is quite patronising to the black community.

No because Black on Black crime is so prolific.

There is a better table in the FBI's UCR page but I'm tired and can't find it. Try the search engine.

maybe they want to make sure it gets attention because Al Sharpton wouldn't go near it. All Sharpton cares about is making attention by hating on white people.

I don't think you statement is correct. I think they view crime as crime.
