I have had a few upsetting rows with my boyfriend of 10 months because he says he is "falling in love" with me but cannot say he loves me. I went away for two weeks recently and he missed me so much that when I got back he told me he was going to marry me some day, and confessed that he was falling in love with me so much that is scared him. I asked him why and he said it was a big deal for him, and he was scared because "I am so much better than him." He has had two failed engagements and his parents went through a messy divorce and it's almost as if he doesn't say it out loud it won't hurt as much if our relationship doesn't work out. He said "there is no other girl in the world for him, and there never will be and that is the best I am going to get out of him" How can I place less importance on my need to hear those three words?

It sounds like he is a little insecure about being in such a position - perhaps he worries that he is going to fail you too - Clearly he cares about you an awful lot and doesn't want to hurt you.
As for the three sacred words, sit down with him and tell him how you feel about it in a calm and relaxed manner - being agitated and trying to discuss delicate situations never helped anyone - Tell him that it is not such a big thing and that you will be pleased if and when he does say it because you know he will mean it, and reassure him that there is more to your relationship than saying 'I love you' - he needs to know that you aren't sitting tapping your foot waiting for him to say it! Good Luck.

It sound to me like he is afraid of another failed relationship, not to mention the fact that his own parents did the same. If you really love him - and I mean REALLY love him - then just be patient and understanding. In time he will come around. If it really bothers you that much, don't try to understand him. You either have to accept him as he is or move on.

by taking the time to have better understanding in him, he has told you in so many words as to why it is that he can't say it and your just not accepting it... you need to be accepting of how he feels and you need to realize that just because he doesn't say that he loves you doesn't mean that he doesn't feel it... he clearly loves you, stop pushing the word issue and be more happy that he can show that with actions instead of just words...

I has only been 10 months, be patient. Eventually he will be albe to tell you, when he is able to let himself feel it again.
