No, "atheism" is not a religion, for the same reason that "theism" or "deism" are not religions. These terms ONLY describe where one stands on the issue of deity. You need more than that to define an actual religion.

ALL you can be sure about when somebody says "I'm an atheist" is that they don't believe in deity. That's ALL the term "atheism" means: a + theism = "without" + "bellief in deity".

The bottom line is that religion and theism can be mutually exclusive. You can have people who believe in God yet don't subscribe to a particular religion, and you can even have people who subscribe to a non-theistic religion (Raeleans, Theravada Buddhists, Taoists, etc. -- and yes these are in fact religions, not "just philosophies". Philosophies don't include ceremony and dogma; religions do.)

Religion:

Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.
A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

I do not fit into any of these and these are what the dictionary defines as religion.

Please buy a dictionary. Or at the very least go to dictionary.com and look up the word Religion. Religion means BELIEF IN A HIGHER POWER.

I really wish people would quit trying to change the definitions of words to fit their idea of what something is.

If you don't believe in a higher power then how can you have a religion? Atheists live a rational life, using reason and care for their fellow humans, as a way to live their lives. There are atheists who were raised as atheists and there are atheists who realized that they no longer believed the fairy tales in taught in church and drifted away from silliness to sense.

actually that isn't true, I suppose they may have a philosophy but that isn't the same as a religion. And a person who doesn't believe in anything is a Nihilist. Atheists do believe in something, They believe there is no GOD.

Atheism is not a religion. A religion is a belief about a supernatural supreme being. No exists in atheism. So you're wrong.

Peace.

"If atheism is a religion, then: Silence is a language. Dead is a state of mind. Hunger is a gourmet meal. Health is a disease. Bald is a hair colour."
