My young cat, Kenya, is currently nursing her second litter of kittens. She is a wonderful mom and rarely even leaves her kittens alone. However, it seems to be taking a toll on her. Nursing SEVEN kittens is draining her. She is not her usual happy self, and worse, she is SO skinny. She has always been an active, petite cat- but she looks so unhealthy. She has a constant supply of dry food, and I frequently feed her wet food as well. Do you have to take a cat to the vet to get her wormed? I'm not even sure if it's safe to worm her while nursing...if you have any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it!

You need to add some meat to her diet, and kitten milk replacer, let her drink it or mix it with her food. With such a large litter, she could develop eclampsia, which is low blood calcium and is fatal if not treated. And,after the kittens are weaned, you need to get her spayed.Another litter could kill her. And,yes it is safe to worm nursing mothers, but you would need to take her to the vet to be weighed and have her stool checked. She should probably be seen anyway,if she is that skinny. This is why it's important to get you animals fixed - so many things can go wrong. Now you may just lose her because you were not responsible enough to get her spayed. Please take her and the babies to the vet asap.

I understand different countires vets seem to give diferent advise but when my cat was pregnant i was advised to worm her so she would pass on some immunity to them and then i wormed the kittens as well but cannot remember at what age i think it may have been 4 weeks but couldn't be sure. Just call and ask your vet for advise but i would worm her and i don't think it would be a problem. She will howeverbe very skinny due to nursing the kittens and needs to eat a lot more and often advisable to give mum kitten food as it has more nutrients for her. I hope she feels better soon and enjoy the kittens.

If Kenya has food available then she probably does need to be wormed. You can do it yourself and it is safe to do while she's nursing.
Nursing mothers can get run down and seven is a big litter for a small cat. Feline vitamins and a calcium supplement are always good to help an expectant or nusing mother stay healthy.

My cat was the same way. I switched to kitten food that is higher in nutrients--both dried and lots of wet. I let her eat whenever she wanted and I also bought KMR. A milk for bottle feed kittens that is very good to give to nursing mothers also.
