I am buying a flashlight. Two different companies are using candlepower and lumens to measure the brightness. Its difficult to compare. How many lumes equal to candlepower or vice versa?

If a light source emits one candela of luminous intensity into a solid angle of one steradian, the total luminous flux emitted into that solid angle is one lumen. Alternatively, an isotropic one-candela light source emits a total luminous flux of exactly 4π lumens. The lumen can be thought of casually as a measure of the total "amount" of visible light emitted.

A standard 100 watt incandescent light bulb emits approximately 1700 lumens in North America and around 1300 lumens in 220V areas of the world. See luminous efficacy for the specific efficiency of various types of electric light sources.

Candlepower To Lumens

foot-candles = lumens per sq.ft
example a room has an area of 600 sqft illuminated by a 200 watt incandescent bulb of 3,300 lumens output, the average illumination on the surface is 3300/600 = 5.5 foot-candles

in lighting design IES lighting handbook specified illumination level for different areas (public washroom 30 ft-cd), then choose different lighting source for the lumens output. apply that to the public washroom area.

Simply put:
You are 'comparing apples & oranges`.
Candle power is a unit of brightness.
Lumen is a unit of light output.
One square foot at one candle power
is one lumen of light.
