Because they are made of yummy meat.
People who hunt just for trophies are idiots. Eat your kill and tan the hide!

First of all, the population of animals would increase dramatically if we didn't hunt. Then they would be starving during the winter, coyotes would increase too due to more food for them, animals would loose their fear of humans. I'm not just talking about cute bambi in your yard! (bears would be dangerous!) Second, for those few people like me, the hides of an animal can be used for everything like clothing, shelter, crafts. Bones can be used for fishing, tanning deerhides, cooking, and lots of things. I know, I may sound too much like I'm living in the past, but really, I live this way. Other people have answered your question saying things about the lack of antibiotics, which is VERY true too! There are many reasons many people decide to go hunting. And I belive hunting keeps everything healthy, including us! Better than that meat in the superstore, that's for sure!

the way the ? is phrased shows a definite bias.
The pastime of hunting is a much anticipated annual event for many sportsman.
Many Friends and family alike join together in the sport, yes for the possibility of putting some meat in the freezer, but that is just a bonus to the hunt. if it were just about the meat, many a hunter would starve.
There is alot more time spent hunting(about 99.999999999999%) and enjoying the outdoors, camping, friendships than the flash of a kill.

Let me fetch it to you this way. The meat you get at the supermarket is filled with chemicals for preservation, the animal it came from was more than likely fed hormones for growth, and the animal was killed anyway. That beef you get in the market? The cow was killed. No two ways about it. Animals don't give up a portion of their carcass; its all or nothing.
Wild game, such as deer, bear, rabbit, turkey, etc are free from that, are better for your health (due to competition of food and space) and are just as tastey as that t-bone you bought the other night.
Your ansectors killed wild game to survive. Now, OTHER people kill domestic animals for YOUR survival.
I don't hunt to kill. I like to hunt because I get to go out, in the wilderness and possiblly see a wild creature in it's native habitat. I don't need to kill a animal to be happy. Indeed, I could see one deer all of deer season, not kill it, not even shoot at it, etc and still have a good season.
You may disagree with my opinion, and quite frankly, I don't care. You can rave and rant all you want about how it's cruel and we kill defenseless animals. There is a message behind hunting. We keep animal population in check, we're conservationists (more or less), and WE LIKE IT. It's a free country. We hunt. It's our choice.
I'm not saying this in a superior tone, nor am I saying your point of view is wrong. It is merely your opinion, and others may or may not agree with it. I just happen to disagree with it. Just remember, just because you believe something is wrong, doesn't make your opinion superior to others. There are ALWAYS two sides to a story. You need to take the time to listen to the opposing sides before you pass judgement.

We do it to lower animal population and for food and money. We dont actually need the meat but it is so much better than your average cow steak, or chicken, pig, whatever, wild game tastes better. The fur is valuable on some animals. Some big cats up north can bring over $300 for one fur from a lynx and other big cats like that. We also hunt because its relaxing to sit in the woods and enjoy nature, and not all hunters come out of the forest with meat.

1. Factory farmed meat products are full of antibiotics, growth
hormones and other drugs.
2. Wild game has none of those things in it.
3. The human animal is a predator by natures/gods design
4. When you buy meat at a restaurant or market you are paying someone else to do your killing for you
5. There are more reasons but if you actually have to ask this question then you're not likely to be able to understand the answers.

because we are and always have been natural predators. some people express this instinct in the natural way by hunting others pervert it into trying to control other people & make them do what YOU think they should as in politics.
there is no difference between gardening, fishing, & hunting its an instinct to find satisfaction in procuring food & learning & improving the skills it takes to do so. without that instinct we would have become extinct long ago & you & I would have never been born.

Nature.
Men have hunted since before history. It's one of the most natural and beautiful experiences in which you can participate.
Man was created, or evolved depending on your perspective, to be an Omnivore. We were made to eat and enjoy all of the bounties of the earth, sea and sky, be it animal or vegetable.
Anyone who does not is simply perverting Nature and I don't tolerate perverts.

I for one am completely in favor of hunting in general (regardless of whether it's for sport or for food). I hunt and do so to add meat to my freezer. It definitely saves me a lot of money at the butcher shop.
I also hunt because I enjoy it. It allows me to spend time with my friends and family. I get so much entertainment out of listening to people go on and on about how hunting isn't necessary and that all hunters are evil devils. What's most interesting to me is that without hunting, the human race would have ceased to exist long ago. People may not need meat to exist now, but that is a very recent development.
It's true that I don't "have" to hunt. I choose to do so. It's a tradition in my family, it provides free food for my family's table, and I enjoy doing it. To top it all off, it's legal and completely ethical. There are too many sympathizers in this world who attach themselves to causes like animal rights....honestly, I believe in animal rights and am against cruelty to animals. BUT, if you've ever been hunting (or if you knew anything about it), you would know that the goal of most hunters is to make a clean, quick kill. Check out some of your local chicken processors. See how the chickens hang upside down as they go down the processing line waiting for their heads to be lopped off. You're against hunting when you should be focusing your attention on people and companies that don't promote quick kills.
Make no mistake....it is true that animals were created to be a part of the food chain. Animals kill instinctively to survive...humans are no different. Next time you look in the mirror, smile at yourself and take a look at those incisors in your mouth....they aren't there to make you look pretty.
I don't try to force my hunting beliefs on you.....don't try to force your anti-hunting beliefs on me.
A good friend of mine has an interesting take on life and ethics. He says that there are too many people out there trying to change the minds of other people. If what those people are doing (in this case hunting) is legal, then simply trying to convince them that they are wrong isn't going to work. If you are really against hunting, you should be taking your battle to the legislature instead of coming here insulting us law abiding hunters who choose to live a lifestyle that you think is evil.

Because that is how you get the meat from the animal. You don't ask why does the rancher kill the cow, pig, or chicken do you? It's all very simple. If you don't kill it, you can't grill it. I believe it was Ted Nugent who said that.

For one thing, it is unusually cruel to try to eat a living animal. For another, a live animal will kick the lid off the pot that you are trying to cook him in. This can be a serious safety hazard.
