Pedigree is a ok brand of dog food, you could pay a little more for Beneful puppy food since it has vegetables in them or maxium nutrition, most of all other dog foods say they have chicken beef pork or what ever but read the ingredients all it is meal liver meal beef meal chicken meal wich is really not good for your dog, the three that i name were recommended by my vet to use,
Here is another way to keep your lab healthy put him on vitamins daily this will also help to give your dog the nutrients that are not in the dog food,
check out http://nuvetlabs.com read there ingedients and facts about there vitamins, i use the vitamins for my dogs and they are healthy, vet said after checkup that the vitamins i am using are among the top of the line, and are very good,
I dont agree with some of the dog foods being named by DP if there were something wrong with them then they would already be pulled, the food and health administration would have had stores pull these items,
not only i asked my vet before i bought beneful if it was just another low quality brand and the vet stated no other wise they wouldnt be selling brands like beneful, maximun nutrition, innova, the brands dont have just beef meal or chicken and liver meal wich is fake, Maxium Nutriention ingredient is real Lamb I had that confirmed by my friend who works for the company that make produces Maximum Nutrition and said yes it is real lamb, and that it is not the fake beef that is mixed with soybean, at the Animal Vet hospital, I was recommended beneful for my puppies and maximum nutrition for my adult dogs and still using it

No, no, NO. Pedigree is absolute trash. I understand that he "likes it," but dogs will gladly eat out of a garbage can if you let them, so that's not a very good indication of quality.
Go with Canidae or Innova if you can. Canidae has a store locater on their web site, and I'm sure there's a store near you that sells it. They are both super high quality foods with all human-grade ingredients. Good meat content, no fillers, and they cost about the same as the garbage food you're feeding your pup now.
If you can't get either one of these, spend a few minutes actually looking at the ingredients on dog food bags. Meat should be the first few ingredients, and there should be NO corn. As DP already said, 99% of all foods you can find at grocery stores or Wal-Mart/K-Mart type places are awful, and only about 10% of food at pet stores is any better.
Also, this web site has really thorough dog food reviews, and will tell you what is good, what is bad, and exactly why: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

DP has already told you what foods to stay away from, since I agree, I'm not going to repeat it.
But here are some foods that are good to feed.
Canidae-this food is great for all life stages, you'll never have to switch :)
Innova and Innova Evo- the Evo is about as close as you'll get to a natural raw diet in kibble form
Natural Balance-another all life stages food
Nature's Variety- not bad, my dogs love the medallions
You may look at some of these foods and say they cost to much. But you also have to remember with high quality foods you're going to feed less, because they are more digestable. So it evens out pretty well. Since it is more digestable, you'll have less yard clean up, always a bonus. These high quality foods also use higher quality, human grade ingredients, and don't use chemical preservatives. This leads to a healthier, happier dog, and less vet visits as well.
Good luck with your new pup.
*Vets are great for medical advice, not so much for nutritional advice. Vets are NOT required to take nutritional courses, the courses that are offered to them are taught by major pet food companies. I've had several vets admit to me that they know very little about nutrition. They only go off what the dog food companies tell them, and what company rep is going to say something bad about their food?

Absolutely NOT, it's one of the worst foods out there. There is a big class action lawsuit against them for the horrible ingredients they use in the food. Basically ALL Purina, Iams/ Eukanuba, Ol Roy, Kibbles N Bits, Pedigree, Beneful, and Science DIet, anything that you can get in the grocery store or Walmart.. Garbage..

well if your pup likes it and you like it then it probably is. and it's a pretty good brand. if you dont feel comfortable with it go to a petco or a petsmart and ask one of the workers for good dog food brands. some are expensive and some are cheap, make the right choice for you puppy.
ps. if you dont pick this as the best answer, i understand. but this is the simplest most practical one i can give you.
