For self defense you wouldn't want to go with something so low-calibre that wouldn't stop a 300 pound man with a pcp high. In other words, if you have a .25, just throw it at him, otherwise, you might tick him off. I would look into a 9 mm or .45. If you aren't familiar with weapons, you would want to check out firearm safety and training courses. Check with your police dept. and they can fill you in on those. Whatever you get, be sure to get some type of security device for it so children can't, repeat CAN'T, get to it.

Simple question, complex answer.
I assume this is for your parents? How much experience and training to they have with firearms? If that is limited or none at all, then I would suggest a Smith & Wesson, Model 10, heavy barrel revolver. This is a double action, six shot, fixed sight, .38 cal. revolver. Get the 4 inch heavy barrel.
This particular model gun has been around for 100 years. It is a proven design and a proven caliber. It is a robust gun that will last a lifetime with minimal care.
It they live in an urban (city) area; load the gun with prefragmented bullets. They will not overpenetrate a target or go through walls into the next house or apartment. If they live in a more rural setting, load the gun with 125 gr. jacketed hollow points.
Then get some training. Real training, from a weapons trainer, not a buddy who happens to own a gun.
You might also consider a large, aggressive dog and some pepper spray as an alternative.
Years ago I answered an "Intruder Call" at a single woman's apartment. When I got there I was amazed at what I found. The guy broke in the front door of the apartment and was halfway into the living room when the woman's large, aggressive Rottweiler lit into him. She then came out of the bedroom armed with a Cat-o-Nine Tails whip. This is a short handled whip that has nine, two foot long braided leather whips, tipped in metal. She about flayed the guy alive with that thing. He was armed with a knife, but between the dog and the whip, he stood no chance.

For an inexperience gunhandler, a .38 special revolver. For the more experienced, I would recommend a Glock model 22 semi-auto in .40 S&W caliber . Whatever you get, remember the gun is no good, if you don't have the skills to use it. Go to the range and get proficient, so you can hit what you are shooting at, if that time should come.

Shotgun
> 12 gauge preferably
> Pump-action, the sound of a cocking shotgun w/ a solid announcement that you have a gun is a good deterrent
> Something with a pistol grip for better control
> Get ammo with a good spread, you just need to point it at their general direction and fire.
> One of those sure fire flashlights could be good, enough strength the fill a room and blind a person. Just in case you want so positive ID before you start blasting.
If you are looking for a pistol then I would recommend a 45 cal., one round should put anyone down.

A shotgun or a medium calliber pistol like a .38 special. A revolver would be the best pistol, it always works and never jams. You don't want a magnum, it has the potential of going through a couple of walls and into your neighbors house.

Depends on how old they are. If they can see good, no physically problems etc. Most any is good self defense, if they know how to use it safely. If in doubt, get a 12 G. shotgun, hard to miss a target with this.

I hope you're in the US. A small handgun should suffice. There are thousands to take your pick from, Its just a question of budget and what you like the look of. Although a handcannon like a Magnum or a Desert Eagle is probably a bit overkill
