First ask where the rumor stems from. If it is something the police have done, then there are actions you can take. They are putting your life in jeopardy. I've known a few cops who would tell lies like this. Mostly as a piss poor excuse to say "I heard a rumor, can we search you?". I've also known a few that would check these rumors and when they know it's a bogus deal would tell me who said it. whosarat.com is a paysite for just this sort of thing. It used to be free. The cops love to use people as an excuse, but since you say noone comes by anymore I wonder what really happened. It's not my place to say but it must be done. Maybe your friends weren't all that great to start with. They may have done you a favor.

LOL!!! Working with the police is slander?!?!! You knocked me out of my chair with that one, Rosemary!!

I sure would like to hear the whole story on this one.

If "Joe Blow" is a known, dangerous person, and telling him that you are a police informant would endanger you life; you actually do have grounds for a complaint. However, you can not sue for slander. You can complain to the department's Internal Affairs or to the Police Chief that the officer's comments have endangered you. I suppose you could retain an attorney and have him file a restraining order preventing the police from talking to Joe about you.

Thanks for an entertaining question. . .

The definition of slander is:
A type of defamation. Slander is an untruthful oral (spoken) statement about a person that harms the person's reputation or standing in the community

Working with the Police would damage your reputation?

Off the top of my head I can't think of any law in my jurisdiction that says I can't tell a lie to someone on the street. My policy manual does not forbid me from lying to people. I can't lie on the stand of course or when I am ordered by my superiors to tell the truth but that's not what you're talking about here.

Old Fuzz is right about filing a complaint though..........

Old Fuzz is right, saying that you are working with the police is not slander! LOL!

And if the police tell you that the word on the street is that you are working with them, then that's them informing YOU of what SOMEONE ELSE said, not the police talking about you.

Cops can do most any thing they want to. Sounds like you've never been to court to fight a ticket. The judge generally sides with the officer in a majority of the cases no matter what evidence or testimony you offer to the contrary. So it's not just a case of cops being liars...Include the judges with their over-sized egos and superior insight! Just remember, they are all political appointees-NUFF SAID!
