my diabetic grandma just had a double bypass. she made it through, but had to be put on the ventilator because she wasn't able to breathe on her own. i'm wondering if this is normal for patients who have just come out of this type of surgery? is it a bad sign, or will she be ok? the last i heard, she is doing better, but i just wanted to know about what's normal to experience after having just come out of surgery. thanks in advance!

CORONARY ARTERIES BYPASS SURGERY -

A surgical procedure performed to improve blood supply to the heart by creating new routes for blood flow when one or more of the coronary arteries become obstructed. The surgery involves removing a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body, such as the leg, and grafting it onto the heart to circumvent the blocked artery.

Often, people will call this kind of surgery a double, triple, or quadruple bypass, referring to the number of diseased coronary arteries that had to be bypassed during the operation.

It is quite common to have double or triple CABG graftings depending on the actual blockade of the vessels. Putting the patient on Ventilators is also a very common feature in the cases of CABG sugeries, in order to ease out breathing for the patients.

So it is all usual and your Grandma will be alright soon. I am a patient who had CABG surgeries twice at a gap of 12 years both time with triple vessel surgeries. Now a days the success rate for CABG is around 99%and you need not worry at all. Best of luck-

Yes it's normal to be on a ventilator for a while after the surgery. When I trained (early 90's), ALL the bypass patients were left on the ventilator overnight. Now, I think they try to get the younger ones off earlier.

As she gets better, the tubes will start coming out, including the breathing tube.
