And how are they installed? I want the beams to look as real as possible but I don't want to go with real wood. They're just too heavy and I'm afraid of rotting, warping, etc.

make them out of 1X... install 2X 4 or 6, flat on the ceiling depending on the width you choose and nail 1X to each side to the depth you want the false beam... nail in the bottom and you have it... there are many choices of material

I found & bought some faux beams from this site: www.apr-express.com. They look so incredibly real and the price wasn't that bad either. Since they were u-shaped it was pretty easy to install. My handyman installed some wood blockers to the ceiling, put some glue on the beams then he attached the beams & screwed them into the blockers. We found the instructions on the website as well. According to the website this material is not supposed to warp, crack or rot. They're definitely not as heavy as real wood. Good luck!
