How do you feel about interracial relationships?

2007-08-29 19:33:10 · 24 answers · asked by Danielle 2 in Family & Relationships Singles & Dating

I was just asking, my boyfriend is white and I am black. But the other day we were out and this lady was looking at us really crazy. So I just wanted to see how people felt about this in 2007. I thought we were over that crazy bull, but I guess not.

I think its so funny that even my mom is ignorant. She had the nerve to tell me when I showed her a pic of my new boyfriend "that he looks white". I was like ummmmmmmmmm what is he supposed to look like. He is white, she said oh well I thought he may have a little color. I just looked at her like she had lost her mind. I dont think she meant to offend me, but I was just like I cant believe you just said that.

I'm probably in the minority these days, but I'm not a big fan of them for a multitude of reasons. Being in the medical field, I know that most races have certain congenital conditions to which they are more often predisposed. Some of these conditions may be debilitating, while others offer greater resistance to disease processes. By dating within your own race, your future children are susceptible to a lesser variety of congenital disease processes, & their medical treatment may be easier in the long run.
Also, children from mixed ethnic backgrounds may face unique prejudices they would not face were they able to claim one race. My own mixed background comes as a perfect example. This weekend, the Cherokee National Holiday is coming up, & I'm glad to be away from work, because I wouldn't be surprised if some of the A.I.M. members who come into town try to start trouble as they have in past years. I've heard of them attacking people unprovoked simply because their victims "weren't Indian enough", being of white & Indian descent. I'm over 1/4 Cherokee, & to people like these, I'm an abomination, as would be my mother, & as would have been my grandmother. Here, the majority of people have some Indian blood as well as another heritage, so it doesn't bother us, but to interloping A.I.M. members, it affects them as badly as someone of mixed black & white heritage would affect a member of the K.K.K.
Personally, I'm glad that I live in a community that can accept me as a person rather than as a mixed-breed, but even I can accept that things may have been easier for me in some respects had I been completely of one race. I have relatives who think I don't act Indian enough, & some who think I'm not white enough. Also, I'm glad I didn't get an Indian Health Services scholarship, because I know people who have been sent to reservations to work. They go in to offer health care services, & are shunned by the communities for their racial differences. Were they full-bloods, they would not have to endure this feeling of having to live & work in a place where they are looked upon as lower than dogs.

I live in Mississippi and you can feel racial tension as soon as you arrive in the state. Ever heard of the Jena 6? Look it up. There's still hatred and bigotry in the world. Sometimes people of the same races hate each other more than they would of another race. I personally don't have a problem with it. I mean if slave owners had not have raped my grandmothers, I would not have had my light skin tone. Plus, people used to live by the paper bag rule. (Ask someone older if they know about it.) Sometimes it is hard to let go of the past when you've been hurt so much by it. The lady probably didn't know she was staring or acting funny towards you two. Either way, I know it's 2007, but you're going to have to get used to people looking and staring at you. Eventually you'll get used to it. I had a Filipino boyfriend once and it was weird at first, but I liked him so much that I forgot about all that and loved him for him. If you want your relationship to work, you're going to both have to ignore what other people think and be each others support system. What I'm trying to say is, be strong for each other and love each other regardless.

I belive interracial relationships are great. I am a white/native american female and am dating a black male. If you think about it no one is one race we all have other races and ethinicities in us. One day it would be great to see a place where race doesn't matter. the more interracial relationships there are the more likely race won't be an issue.

I personally dont have any problem with it. However if I had dated someone other then white I probably would have been disowned. My parents/entire family does not approve of it. But I dont care if someone dates outside of ther race thats their own personal choice. My best guy friend is going to marry a white girl and Im going to be in the wedding!

I don't care about couples who mix colors, because when they have kids, that's when couples really look at the big picture because the kids are the ones that take the rap for being half breed?

It's not fair to the kids, they don't deserve to get picked on. There is too much discrimination.

For some reason many of the older generations have their ignorant ways.We cannot make them change.. only show them that you respect them for who they are and hope they can return the respect by accepting you for who you are. We are all different with a few similarities... it is a shame people are categorized by how they look.
Anyways.. love knows NO boundaries! Be happy with true love.

If its a hassle where you live then move to a big city and you won't be looked at twice. If your friends have a problem with it then get new friends.. As for your mom... hmm I dont know what to say on that one. Just remember that Noah married a black woman :)

i was in one for 5 years, so far the best 5 years of my life, too bad it didn't work out. I'm a light skinned brazilian, she's a little more "choclately" and I couldn't get enough, skinned smooth as silk, I think the fact that she was darker attracted me the most, she had that big curly hair, OH MAN!!! she drove me freakin crazy!!!! We were engaged and all
