Hi Zebra,

A dog that throws up for 5 hours on and off needs to be taken to the vet. Constant throwing up will dehydrate a dog - and serious dehydration can be life threatening. There might be a blockage, which could also be life threatening. Whatever you do - make sure your dog is sufficiently hydrated. Make him drink water, and if he does not want to drink, carefully syringe water into his mouth.

You mentioned his shots... Adverse reactions to vaccination does not just happen on the day of the vaccination. Adverse reactions can be seen immediately or up to 30 days later. Since those kind of vomiting has happened once before -- was that shortly after his vaccinations? If so, it is possible that the overload of vaccines may have led to lymphadenitis (swelling of the lymph nodes). This may explain the vomiting, as swollen lymph glands may obstruct the digestive tract.

Perhaps the problem will resolve itself, but if so, I would recommend for you to read up all you can on the vaccination issues. Over-vaccination is the main TRIGGER (not the CAUSE) for auto-immune conditions, and if you have a dog with a fragile immune system, then you would be well advised to do titre testing instead of vaccination boosters from now on. Having had the shots, your dog has in all likelihood immunity for life to the life threatening illnesses now anyway. Please study the following website carefully - particularly the sections "Immunology 101 and 102". http://www.newvaccinationprotocols.com/Biologics%20Council.htm
Please also study Dr. Jean Dodds website on vaccinations....

If the vomiting continues, you should really go and see your vet and do an Electrolyte test to check the Na:K ratio (Sodium / Potassium ratio). A ratio of less than 27 could be life threatening and your dog might need IV fluids. - Keeping him hydrated is the most important thing to do.

Good luck,
Christina

Yes, he can throw up from eating too fast but to continue to throw up for hours sounds like a stomach blockage. Does he eat grass, chew rawhides, chew on rope toys, or anything else? It could be lodged in his stomach preventing his food from digesting and the only place for it to go is back up. The problem with this is that it can cause a bacterial infection. Don't feed him for 24 hours but make sure he gets plenty of water. Hopefully whatever is blocking it will come out but if nothing happens in 24 hours rush him to the vet.

Withhold food for 12 hours. Then start him on a bland diet, deboned cooked chicken and rice. If he keeps that down continue that for a day or two, then gradually add back in his regular food.

If this continues after trying the bland diet for a day or two, bring him in.

Also make sure he isn't getting dehydrated. A simple test for this is to pick up the skin on his back. If it snaps back he's ok, if it takes awhile for it to go back to normal he is starting to get dehydrated and you should bring him right away.

First thing that came to mind was parvo, but if rottie was given a clean bill of health recently then I don't think it's parvo. Could he have swallowed something (a piece of a toy, a needle?) that is lodged in his throat? Maybe rottie is allergic to something.

have you noticed when you took him out lately he ate alot of grass? That will most likely make him puke. Mine did that once right after mowing the yard so there was big clumps of grass..puked all day..but turned out fine.
