I got a dog, 1/2 German Shepherd 1/2 Mastiff and I'm not sure if he's neutured.

Is there a way I can tell without going to the vet? He's about 4 yrs old

I know the most obvious sign is the presence of testicles but it should be pointed out that some dog owners have something called "Neuticles" implanted after they get their dogs neutered. They're mainly put in for appearance purposes because some people don't like how a male dog looks without the scrotal sac. They seem to work pretty well but one problem I've heard some dog owners say is that the devices make a sound when the dog sits down on a hard surface.

Sure is. Get him to either lift his leg or roll over on his back. You will see his penis and the sheath. Closer to the tail end of it you will either see testicles, kinda like a plastic baggie with 2 acorns in it, or you will see nothing. If you see nothing, he is neutered. If you really aren't sure, just stop by your local humane society with him and ask them to tell you. If he isn't, they can help you get him done at a low cost clinic many times. Good luck!

Well, now that you know he is still intact, its a good idea to neuter him.
Unneutered dogs may mark inside the house, be more aggressive, run off to a female in heat, and are more at risk of cancer.
Neutering will cause the dog to stop marking inside, be easier to handle and probably not try to run away, and reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

Look between his back legs. If you see he's still got testicles, he's not neutered, no testicles=neutered.

It should only take you a second or two to figure it out.

Ummmmm .... yeah, in a male, it's pretty obvious ... usually you can tell by sight, or if not, by touch. It's harder to know in a female, since all that's left is a scar, and often even the vet can't tell!

With a dog that big, you should see something between his back legs. Looks like a sack with 2 golfballs in it. Ask your Dad.

Well,if he has testicles,he's not neutered. If you can't tell by looking ( because they will still have the sac) then you'll have to feel for them. You'll know if they're in there!
